President Muhammadu Buhari pledged\u00a0Thursday\u00a0in Abuja that he and other
\nmembers of the African Union High-Level Consultative Committee\u00a0 on South
\nSudan will do their utmost best to ensure that\u00a0 the peace agreement signed
\nby the various political factions in the country is successfully
\nimplemented.<\/p>\n
Speaking at an audience with South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr Riek
\nMachar Teny Dhurgon, President Buhari assured him that Nigeria and the
\nCommittee will work with all stakeholders to overcome problems hindering
\nthe implementation of the seven-month old agreement.<\/p>\n
“The situation must not deteriorate”, the President told the First Vice
\nPresident who is a signatory to the peace agreement.<\/p>\n
Expressing concern that compliance with the agreed ceasefire in South
\nSudan has not been total, President Buhari said that Nigeria will work in
\ncollaboration with other members of the African Union to achieve a speedy
\nstabilisation of the situation.<\/p>\n
The President advised leaders of South Sudan not to allow ethnicity and
\ncorruption to gain a foothold in the new country.<\/p>\n
“Ethnicity and corruption are a lethal combination. You have to deal with
\nthem otherwise instability will continue,”\u00a0 President Buhari warned after
\nreceiving a briefing from Dr. Riek Machar on the current state of affairs
\nin South Sudan.<\/p>\n
Also\u00a0Thursday\u00a0in Abuja, President Buhari received a Special envoy of the
\nAfrican Union\u00a0 Chairman,\u00a0 President Idris Deby-Itno.<\/p>\n
The Special envoy, Mr Abubakar Saleh Chahaimi delivered a message from
\nPresident Deby to President Buhari on the strengthening of bilateral
\nrelations between Nigeria and Chad, as well as the work of the African
\nUnion Consultative Committee on South Sudan.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
