The Forum of States Independent Electoral Commissions\u00a0 (FOSIECOM) and a
\ncoalition of local and national election observers have said Saturday’s
\nlocal council polls hel in Sokoto were free, credible and transparent due
\nto the use of card readers.<\/p>\n
FOSIECOM National Chairman, Justice Afolabi Adeyinka, who is
\nalso the\u00a0 Chairman of Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission,
\nmade the disclosure at a news briefing in Sokoto on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Adeyinka who was also a former Chief Justice of Lagos State said, ”I
\nhave to commend the courage of of the Sokoto State Independent
\nElectoral Commission in sticking with its plan to conduct the election
\nusing card reader machine and the permanent voters card.<\/p>\n
” We saw the preparations and the eventual conduct of the election
\nand we agreed to the fact that whoever wins, it is a reflection of the
\ngeneral wish of the people of Sokoto.<\/p>\n
” The decision to allow voters cast their votes immediately after
\nverification has also helped the process. It has reduced voting time
\nand ensure large number of votes at the final count.<\/p>\n
” Many came out to vote in the morning and left the polling units
\nimmediately after casting their votes without having to wait for some
\nhours as was the case during the national elections,” he added.<\/p>\n
Adeyinka also commended the state government for the support it gave
\nthe SIECOM which led to this outcome.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, a coalition of domestic election observers led by
\nconstitutional lawyer and Human Rights Activist, Mr
\nFestus Okoye has commended the state government for providing the
\nenabling environment that led to the peaceful conduct of the elctions.<\/p>\n
Okoye who is also Executive Director, Human Rights Monitor said at a
\nnews briefing in Sokoto on Sunday also commended the state government
\nfor shunning the caretaker committee syndrome.<\/p>\n
It further commended the people of the state for their exemplary
\nconduct which enabled the elections to be conducted in a peaceful and
\ntransparent manner.<\/p>\n
” We are convinced that the conduct of the Sokoto State Local
\nGovernment Elections met national and regional standards in the
