Rivers State Government will immortalise Mr Samuel Okonta,\u00a0 the Corps
\nMember who lost his life during the\u00a0 rerun\u00a0 legislative\u00a0 elections\u00a0 in
\nthe State,\u00a0 Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike\u00a0 has\u00a0 announced.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0 also declared\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 State Government\u00a0 will provide\u00a0 all
\nnecessary\u00a0 assistance\u00a0 for the police to investigate\u00a0 the killing of the
\ncorps member, with a view to\u00a0 identifying those responsible\u00a0 and
\nprosecuting\u00a0 them.<\/p>\n
Speaking\u00a0 at\u00a0 the\u00a0 Rivers State National Youth Service Corps, NYSC,
\nHeadquarters\u00a0 in\u00a0 Port Harcourt\u00a0 on\u00a0 Wednesday,\u00a0 Governor\u00a0 Wike\u00a0 also
\nannounced\u00a0 an increment\u00a0 in the\u00a0 montly allowance\u00a0 of\u00a0 corps members
\nserving\u00a0 outside\u00a0 Port Harcourt\u00a0 from N10, 000 to N15000. He also
\nincreased the state monthly allowance of\u00a0 corps members\u00a0 serving\u00a0 in\u00a0 Port
\nHarcourt\u00a0 from N5000\u00a0 to N10000.<\/p>\n
He expressed sadness\u00a0 that the corps member\u00a0 died serving the nation. He
\nsaid that the Rivers\u00a0 State Government will take care of the family of the
\nlate corps member.<\/p>\n
Governor Wike\u00a0 noted that\u00a0 the death is even more painful\u00a0 because\u00a0 the
\ncorps member was an orphan who suffered through schooling\u00a0 and was on the
\nverge of being of help to his immediate\u00a0 family.<\/p>\n
He said: “The death of this corps member\u00a0 is unfortunate\u00a0 and condemnable.
\nI urge the Police to thoroughly\u00a0 investigate the crime. The outcome\u00a0 of
\nthe\u00a0 investigation\u00a0 should\u00a0 be made public so that those involved\u00a0 are
\nprosecuted. The killing\u00a0 of\u00a0 this corps member\u00a0 must not be\u00a0 swept under
\nthe carpet.<\/p>\n
“I call for post mortem on the corpse of the corps member\u00a0 so that we can
\nascertain\u00a0 the\u00a0 type of bullet and type of\u00a0 gun that killed him. The post
\nmortem will also determine who bears that type of gun that\u00a0 killed\u00a0 the
\ncorps\u00a0 member “.<\/p>\n
The governor\u00a0 said\u00a0 his administration\u00a0 will also take measures\u00a0 to
\nimprove\u00a0 security\u00a0 in the state. He said\u00a0 that\u00a0 steps will be taken to
\nensure\u00a0 that\u00a0 the incident\u00a0 does not reoccur.<\/p>\n
He also commiserated with the Department\u00a0 of\u00a0 State Services , over the
\ndeath of their<\/p>\n
State Coordinator of the NYSC, Mrs Ngozi Nwatarali commended the\u00a0 governor
\nfor commiserating with the NYSC\u00a0 at its moment\u00a0 of grief. She appealed
\nfor greater protection\u00a0 for corps members\u00a0 during\u00a0 elections.<\/p>\n
Responding\u00a0 on behalf\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 family,\u00a0 Alex Edeabeatu\u00a0 thanked the
\nGovernor\u00a0 for his gesture.\u00a0 He said\u00a0 that\u00a0 the\u00a0 late corps member was a
