The Northern chapter of the Christians Association of Nigeria, CAN, on
\nSunday, asked the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to
\nintensify its efforts in fixing the problem of fuel scarcity, which had
\nlingered in the country since January.<\/p>\n
The association said the untold hardship Nigerians were experiencing as an
\noil producing nation was unacceptablle.<\/p>\n
The association\u2019s Public Relations Officer, Rev. John Hayab, who spoke on
\nthe significance of Easter celebration, said in Kaduna that the government
\nshould reflect on the fact that Jesus Christ died to eliminate the
\nsufferings of mankind and do the needful to eliminate the current hardship
\nbeing faced by Nigerians.<\/p>\n
The Northern CAN\u2019s spokesman criticised the Minister of State for
\nPetroleum Resources Mr. Ibe Kachikwu, for saying that fuel scarcity might
\nlinger till May. Kachikwu, who is also the Group Managing Director of the
\nNigeria National Petroleum Corporation, had told State House
\ncorrespondents that he was not a magician and the fuel scarcity could not
\nbe eliminated with a magic wand.<\/p>\n
Hayab described Kachikwu\u2019s statement as unguarded and an insult to the
\nlong-suffering Nigerians, stressing that Nigerians voted the current
\ngovernment for positive change.<\/p>\n
According to him, government is meant to cushion effects of hardship on
\nthe people, hence it needs to wake up to its responsibilities now more
\nthan ever before.<\/p>\n
The leadership of Northern CAN, he noted, was of the view that the
\ncelebration would be worthwhile if Nigerians were not facing such tough
\ntimes.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cWhat we are saying is that government is meant for the people
\nand as such government should double its efforts to reducing the pains
\ninflicted on the average Nigerians by the fuel scarcity in the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe way and manner Nigerians queue, (some even sleep at filing stations)
\nin the face of this hardship is unacceptable to the leadership Northern
\nCAN. Northern CAN wants the government to earnestly do something urgent to
\navert this ugly situation before it gets out of hands.\u201d<\/p>\n
The association, however, urged Nigerians to support government\u2019s efforts
\nby doing the right thing at the right time, to move the country forward.<\/p>\n
