{"id":48098,"date":"2016-04-01T21:02:40","date_gmt":"2016-04-01T20:02:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=48098"},"modified":"2016-04-01T21:02:40","modified_gmt":"2016-04-01T20:02:40","slug":"silence-not-golden-walk-rape-organised-moremi-hostel-friday-april-1-2016-unilag-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/silence-not-golden-walk-rape-organised-moremi-hostel-friday-april-1-2016-unilag-lagos\/","title":{"rendered":"*Silence Is Not Golden: A walk Against Rape Organised By Moremi Hostel, Friday April 1, 2016, Unilag, Lagos.*"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It was a gathering of students, lecturers, nollywood, Music icon, activists<br \/>\nand the media at the awareness work against sexual harassment and rape, the<br \/>\nwalk started off from Moremi hall the organizer of the programme.<\/p>\n<p>The president of Women Arise, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin, while addressing the<br \/>\nrally said:<\/p>\n<p>Rape is oppressive; it is forceful means of possession; and it is evil!<\/p>\n<p>Rape has destroyed lives, it has not repaired any, and it has to be stopped.<\/p>\n<p>Many promising girls have had their morals destroyed, their confidence<br \/>\nconquered, their esteem lowered and their future destabilized.<\/p>\n<p>More so, victims would become mothers in soon future, but the trauma they<br \/>\ngot from their previous experiences of rape would also affect how they<br \/>\ntrain their children. This is another way the rape experience of one person<br \/>\nposes effects on the generation they would lead.<\/p>\n<p>Rape does not only affect the psyche of the immediate victims, it affects a<br \/>\ngeneration each time it occurs. This is so, in that the victims develop an<br \/>\naltered psychological process that affect how they relate with families,<br \/>\nfriends, associations and the general society.<\/p>\n<p>Asides from psychological distress, victims also become vulnerable to<br \/>\nchronic, and sometimes incurable diseases such as HIV\/AIDS and other life<br \/>\nthreatening STI&#8217;s.<\/p>\n<p>Records of unplanned pregnancies are also high from incidences of rape.<\/p>\n<p>She also admonished those in this practice of sexual harassment to desist.<br \/>\nWe also advise the University authorities to help lives escape it by<br \/>\nputting measures in place that check abuses and we encourage those who are<br \/>\ncurrently being pestered for such abuse to stand against it, speak out and<br \/>\novercome it all at once.<\/p>\n<p>Nollywood Star, Mrs. Foluke Daramola Salako, said she was a survivor and<br \/>\nwhen she spoke out she regained her dignity again. She further said<\/p>\n<p>There are places where the incidence of rape is common, and so we must go<br \/>\nto such places and address it there. One of such places is our higher<br \/>\ninstitutions. University authorities must put measures in place to check<br \/>\nmischievous male lecturers from sexually harassing female students and also<br \/>\ndiscourage female students from sexually harassing their lecturers.<\/p>\n<p>It is not only unethical to base academic success\/assistance on such unfair<br \/>\nimpositions; it is also unhealthy and destructive to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Michael Stephens, also known as rugged man asserted that once the<br \/>\nincidence of rape happens successfully, its damaging effect is long<br \/>\nlasting, if not ever lasting. Those who are still being pestered should<br \/>\nspeak out not, because silence is not golden.<\/p>\n<p>If you do not speak out, you imprison yourself and get disturbed all alone.<br \/>\nSpeaking out debugs your mind of the evil and gives you psychological<br \/>\nfreedom.<\/p>\n<p>Moremi Hall Mistress Unilag, Professor Virgy Onyene; said Rape is evil and<br \/>\nmust be stopped!<\/p>\n<p>She asserted that for those who have been victims, they must however, still<br \/>\nspeak out. With proper counseling, they will overcome the trauma and also<br \/>\nexpose rapists, thereby cutting off their chances of violating others.<\/p>\n<p>Moremi Hall Chairperson, Miss Zainab Olaitan, said Silence is not<br \/>\ngolden!
