Zaria has drawn public attention as it takes toll on innocent patients.<\/p>\n

Joining the public concern, the Northern Emancipation Network yesterday<\/p>\n
said it has become necessary at this point to seek the intervention of the<\/p>\n
Federal Government and other national leaders especially the Emir of<\/p>\n
Zazzau in whose domain the University is located.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A statement signed by the Group’s Coordinator, Abdul-Azeez Suleiman., said<\/p>\n
it was touched by the sufferings of in and out patients who rely on the<\/p>\n
services of the shut health facilities.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Suleiman said his group believes a prompt intervention by FG, the Senate<\/p>\n
and the Emir of Zazzau would bring an end to the impasse.On Saturday,<\/p>\n
three medical associations, comprising medical doctors, nurses and<\/p>\n
midwives, and the academic technologists begun an indefinite strike to<\/p>\n
protest non-payment of entitlements in the last six years which has<\/p>\n
already caused distress to patients who are now faced to seek<\/p>\n
alternatives.<\/p>\n

A statement by the unions and jointly signed by Aminu Mohammed, Hassan<\/p>\n
Garba and Yusuf Haruna for NADUHS, NAAT and NANNM respectively, said after<\/p>\n
wide deliberations, they have resolved to call their members on an<\/p>\n
indefinite strike.<\/p>\n

The grievances highlighted by the unions include non-payment of teaching<\/p>\n
allowances and specialist allowances to technologists and nurses.<\/p>\n
The unions also complained of non-implementation of shift allowances since<\/p>\n
2010.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Other grievances include non-payment of medical hazard allowances,<\/p>\n
relativity and clinical supplementation allowances.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Worried by this development, NEN said its officials have attempted to<\/p>\n
persuade the union leaders who however appeared overwhelmed by their<\/p>\n
members ‘ grievances.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“When we spoke with the leader of NANNM, Comrade Yusuf Haruna, he<\/p>\n
regretted that the University authorities are to blame for the<\/p>\n
consequences of the strike,” Suleiman said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
“We plan to visit the University main campus sometime within the week to<\/p>\n
seek other likely options for getting the workers back to their jobs.”We<\/p>\n
also call on other civil society groups and the religious community to<\/p>\n
speak in the interest of the distressed patients,” Suleiman said.<\/p>\n
