The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has disowned the
\nDeputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as the agency’s Anti-Corruption
\nAmbassador.<\/p>\n
The EFCC said in a Press Statement that it statutory function is to
\ninvestigate financial crimes and not the conferment of awards.<\/p>\n
In a statement dissociating the commission from the action, EFCC
\nSpokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, claimed Bakari acted on his own as the
\ncommission does not give awards but investigates economic and Financial
\ncrimes.<\/p>\n
Wilson said: \u201cThe attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes
\nCommission, EFCC, has been drawn to some reports in the print and online
\nmedia, on April 20, 2016, claiming that the anti-graft agency has
\ndecorated the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, as \u201cAnti-Corruption
\nAmbassador\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccording to a statement issued to the Press by the Special Adviser to
\nthe Deputy Senate President, Uche Anichukwu, the purported decoration, was
\ncarried out by the EFCC National Assembly Liaison Officer, Suleiman Bakari
\nwho was quoted to have said: \u201c On behalf of my acting chairman, Mr.
\nIbrahim Mustafa Magu and the entire management and staff of the EFCC,
\ndecorate you as an Anti-Corruption Ambassador and formally present this
\nframe, as a token of our appreciation to your person and office, and as a
\nsymbol of the institutional partnership between the EFCC and the National
\nAssembly\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe EFCC totally dissociates itself from the purported action of Sulaiman
\nBakari as he acted entirely on his own. \u201cHe clearly acted outside his
\nbrief as a liaison officer as the management of the Commission at no time
\nmandated him to decorate Ekweremadu or any officer of the National
\nAssembly as Anti-Corruption Ambassador.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe statutory mandate of the EFCC is the investigation and prosecution of
\nall economic and financial crimes cases, which does not include the
\ndecoration of individuals as anti-corruption ambassadors.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Commission is not in the habit of awarding titles to individuals. And
\nthose enamoured of titles, know the quarters to approach for such honours,
\nnot the EFCC.<\/p>\n
Members of the public and stakeholders in the fight against corruption are
