Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has said President Mohammadu
\nBuhari\u2019s utterances outside Nigeria was the reason the British Prime
\nMinister, David Cameron described Nigeria as “fantastically corrupt”,
\nsaying; \u201cWhat do you expect from the international community when the
\npresident of a nation keeps going abroad to say that his people are
\ncorrupt?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said it was annoying that President Buhari said he was embarrassed
\nand shocked by Cameron\u2019s comment, adding that instead of telling
\nNigerians that he was shocked, the president should apologise to
\nNigerians for demarketing the country and his people.<\/p>\n

In a statement signed \u00a0his Special Assistant on Public
\nCommunications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Fayose said \u00a0said it was on record that
\nin February this year, President Buhari said in United Kingdom that
\n\u201cNigerians’ reputation for crime has made them unwelcome in Britain\u201d
\nand went on to warn Nigerians to stop trying to make asylum claims in
\nBritain, saying that their reputation for criminality has made it hard
\nfor them to be accepted abroad.<\/p>\n

He said; \u201cWhen a president mounts the podium in foreign lands and
\ngleefully says that his own people are criminals, that they are
\ncorrupt and that those abroad should be sent back home, why won\u2019t
\npresidents of other countries brand all citizens of such a country as
\nfantastically corrupt?<\/p>\n

\u201cRather than this grandstanding from the presidency, conceited efforts
\nshould be made to redeem the image of Nigeria that the president has
\ndestroyed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governor Fayose, who said he was not against the anti-corruption
\nefforts of the federal government, added that all he was saying was
\nthat it should be done in accordance with the laws of the country and
\nthat the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) must stop
\nbehaving as if it is above the law.<\/p>\n

While describing the remand order reportedly granted to the Economic
\nand Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to detain the former Minister
\nof Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode indefinitely as a show of judicial
\nrascality, the governor said; \u201cit is worrisome that some court
\nmagistrates, especially in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have
\nturned themselves into allies of the EFCC in its persecution of
\nNigerians who are opposed to President Mohammadu Buhari\u2019s anti-people
\npolicies.\u201d<\/p>\n

He cautioned court magistrates in the country, especially those in the
\nFCT against the continuous disobedience to the directive of the Chief
\nJudge of the FCT, Justice Ishaq Bello that they should desist from
\ngranting remand orders to the EFCC to detain suspects indefinitely,
\nsaying; \u201cIt now appears that these magistrates are operating as if
\nthey are superior to the FCT Chief Judge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Justice Bello had said during his visit to the Keffi Medium Prison in
\nKeffi, Nasarawa State that; \u201cI understand that EFCC has been bringing
\nsome cases to you and you have been granting them remand orders. You
\nmust no longer do this from today.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that \u201cit is obvious that the EFCC is either corrupting the
\nmagistrates to obtain the remand orders or they are being blackmailed
\nand coerced by the anti-corruption agency.\u201d<\/p>\n

Governor Fayose said; \u201cIn saner climes, anti-corruption agencies don\u2019t
\ngo about arresting suspects, detaining them arbitrarily and coercing
\nthem to make statements implicating themselves. Rather,
\nanti-corruption agencies must have gotten all they needed to prosecute
\na suspect before arresting him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is even more questionable that the court order secured by the
\nEFCC to detain Fani-Kayode indefinitely was gotten barely 24 hours
\nafter the former minister was granted administrative bail by the same
\nEFCC.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow can someone be granted administrative bail and while he was
\ntrying to meet the bail conditions, the EFCC clandestinely rushed to a
\nmagistrate court to secure an order to detain him indefinitely? Isn\u2019t
\nthat a clear show of executive rascality<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
