The Federal Government has warned civil servants in the country not to<\/p>\n
participate in Wednesday\u2019s nationwide indefinite strike called by the
\nNigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress.<\/p>\n
A statement signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation,
\nBabachir David Lawal warned civil servants against participating in the
\nstrike, adding that any worker who participated in the strike would not be
\nentitled to his or her wage.<\/p>\n
The statement read:<\/p>\n
\u201dThe attention of all Public Officers is drawn to the notice issued by the
\nNigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to embark on an indefinite strike from
\nWednesday, 18th May, 2016. This notice is regrettably given in spite of an
\nOrder by the Industrial Court against the strike action.<\/p>\n
\u201dGovernment, therefore, calls upon and advises all workers to respect the
\nlaws of the land and to desist from participating in an illegal strike
\naction.<\/p>\n
\u201dGovernment undertakes to guarantee the safety of workers and their work
\nplaces, and expects that normal work will continue in the interest of the
\nnation.<\/p>\n
\u201dAccordingly, Security agencies have been directed to ensure unimpeded
\naccess to offices, work places and markets.<\/p>\n
\u201dActs of intimidation, harassment, including barricading of gates, locking
\nup of offices, blocking of roads and preventing workers from carrying out
\ntheir lawful duties will be met with appropriate response by the law
\nenforcement agencies.<\/p>\n
\u201dAll workers, whether in public or private sector are further reminded of
\nthe Trade Dispute Act, 2004, which provides that \u201cwhere any worker takes
\npart in a strike, he shall not be entitled to any wages or remuneration
\nfor the period of the strike and any such period shall not count for the
\npurpose of reckoning the period of continuous employment and all rights
\ndependent on continuity of employment shall be prejudicially affected
\naccordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201dAccordingly, all Ministers, Permanent Secretaries and Heads of Government
\nAgencies are hereby directed to invoke the provision of \u201cno work no pay\u201d
\nin respect of any staff who absents him or herself from work to join the
\nstrike action.<\/p>\n
\u201dAttendance registers are required to be opened in all Ministries,
