President Muhammadu Buhari said Wednesday in Abuja that corruption was<\/p>\n
largely responsible for the inability of the Nigerian military to quickly
\ndefeat Boko Haram.<\/p>\n
Speaking at an audience with the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Dr. Ahmed
\nEl-Tayeb, President Buhari said\u00a0 that the loss of 14 local government areas
\nto Boko Haram had greatly tarnished the reputation of the Nigerian Armed
\nForces.<\/p>\n
The President noted, however, that with measures taken by his
\nAdministration to curb corruption and provide better weaponry, logistics,
\ntraining and welfare for soldiers on the frontlines, the Nigerian military
\nhas now almost totally incapacitated Boko Haram as a fighting force and
\nrecovered all territories that were lost to the terrorist sect.<\/p>\n
“When we curbed corruption and removed the\u00a0 injustice in the military, we
\nbegan to make progress,” President Buhari said.<\/p>\n
Welcoming the support of Muslims across the world for Nigeria’s war against
\nBoko Haram, the President said that the war against terrorism was also a
\nwar against injustice, which is not condoned by Islam and all the major
\nreligions.<\/p>\n
“You can’t kill the innocent in churches or in mosques and shout Allahu
\nAkbar,” President Buhari said, adding that the visit of Dr. El-Tayeb and
\nhis expression of solidarity with Nigeria in the war against terrorism was
\na clear indication of global Muslim support for Nigeria against the unjust
\nkilling of the innocent by terrorists.<\/p>\n
The President, who reaffirmed\u00a0 his Administration’s determination to
\nresettle all persons who were displaced by the Boko Haram insurgency,
\nthanked the Grand Imam for the donation of scholarships, educational and
\nmedical supplies to Nigeria’s Internally Displaced Persons.<\/p>\n
Dr. El-Tayeb told President Buhari that Muslims all over the world share
\nNigeria’s pains from terrorism and will continue to support efforts to
