The Federal University of Petroleum Resources, (FUPRE) Effurun, Delta
\nState is the proud host of the latest Professorial Chair that has been
\nestablished by The Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria (SPDC)
\noperated Joint Venture in support of learning and research in Nigerian
\nuniversities.<\/p>\n
The Shell Professorial Chair at FUPRE is for Lightweight Automobile Engine
\nDevelopment, and will be staffed by a Professor who will sit in the
\nDepartment of Mechanical Engineering, leading studies and research into
\nthe field for an initial period of four years.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe establishment of the Chair is an important development for the
\nNigerian automobile industry,\u201d said Igo Weli, SPDC\u2019s General Manager,
\nExternal Relations. \u201cWe will have the opportunity of a consistent and
\nfocused research on an industry, the outcome of which will be good news
\nfor the mobility needs of millions of Nigerians.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Akii Ibhadode said: \u201cWe are
\nlooking for a Professor who should have been in that position for not less
\nthan 10 years, experienced in teaching, research and consulting in
\nmechanical and automobile engineering as well as internal combustion
\nengines. The occupant of the Chair starts work in September 2016. This is
\na unique Professorial Chair and we are grateful to Shell and its Joint
\nVenture partners for the confidence reposed in us.\u201d<\/p>\n
SPDC JV has long supported the development of automobile engineering in
\nNigeria through the sponsorship of University of Lagos, Ahmadu Bello
\nUniversity, Zaria and University of Benin to Shell Eco-marathon in
\nRotterdam, a global competition which encourages students to build and
\nrace energy efficient cars.<\/p>\n
Mr. Weli said: \u201cWe are pleased that the students at FUPRE and also the
\nVice Chancellor who worked with us on the Shell Eco-marathon project when
\nthey were at the University of Benin, and even won awards, are continuing
\nthe collaboration on another level at Effurun.\u201d<\/p>\n
SPDC JV has also established Professorial Chairs at the University of Port
\nHarcourt (Petroleum Engineering), University of Uyo (Biodiversity and
\nClimate Change,) Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife (Geophysics),
\nUniversity of Nigeria, Nsukka, (Environmental Management and Control) and
\nAhmadu Bello University, Zaria (Mechanical Engineering). Three other
\nProfessorial Chairs are inactive.<\/p>\n
Shell Companies in Nigeria have a long history of supporting education
\nthrough scholarships and other initiatives. In 2015, the sum of $10.1
\nmillion was invested in scholarships alone by SPDC JV and Shell Nigeria
\nExploration and Production Company (SNEPCo.) A total of 10,401 (secondary)
\nand 3,532 (university) grants were awarded over the last five years.<\/p>\n
