{"id":49775,"date":"2016-06-01T12:04:42","date_gmt":"2016-06-01T11:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=49775"},"modified":"2016-06-01T12:04:42","modified_gmt":"2016-06-01T11:04:42","slug":"army-admits-killing-40-biafran-agitators-ohaneze-ekweremadu-condemn-bloodbath","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/news\/army-admits-killing-40-biafran-agitators-ohaneze-ekweremadu-condemn-bloodbath\/","title":{"rendered":"Army Admits Killing &#8217;40&#8217; Biafran Agitators, Ohaneze, Ekweremadu Condemn  Bloodbath"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u2026As South-east politicians meet Buhari<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Nigerian Army has admitted killing members of the Indigenous People of<br \/>\nBiafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign<br \/>\nState of Biafra (MASSOB), who were celebrating the 49th Anniversary of the<br \/>\ndeclaration of Biafra by late Col Emeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1967, in<br \/>\nOnitsha, Anambra State and other parts of the South-east region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The army said it killed 5 MASSOB\/IPOB members but eyewitness accounts said<br \/>\nover 40 protesters were killed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nigerian Army has a reputation for killing innocent civilians, an issue<br \/>\nraised by Amnesty International in the case of the massacre of Shiite<br \/>\nMuslims in Kaduna and the confrontation with Boko Haram north-east region<br \/>\nof the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Pan-Igbo socio-cultural group, Ohaneze Ndigbo and the Deputy President<br \/>\nof Senate, Ike Ekweremadu, condemned in strong terms the mass murders of<br \/>\ninnocent young men on a peaceful protest even as some Igbo politicians led<br \/>\nby Senator Ike Ekweremadu held a closed door meeting with President<br \/>\nMohammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The army statement signed the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations of<br \/>\nthe 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Col. H.A. Gambo, said pro-Biafran<br \/>\nagitators became violent and attacked security agents at a school on Atta<br \/>\nRoad near Saint Edmund&#8217;s Catholic Parish, Maryland, Nkpor-Agu in Anambra<br \/>\nState during the protest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe nature of this attack involved brazen employment of various types of<br \/>\nfirearms and all sorts of crude weapons, volatile cocktail such as acid<br \/>\nand dynamites. Instructively troops of 82 Division Nigerian Army, as the<br \/>\nlead agency of the security agencies, had to invoke the extant Rules of<br \/>\nEngagement (ROE) to resort to self-defence, protection of the strategic<br \/>\nNiger Bridge, prevents reinforcement of the pro-Biafran members<br \/>\napparently surging ahead from the far side of the strategic Niger Bridge<br \/>\nat Onitsha.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;All these efforts were in order to de-escalate the palpable tension, as<br \/>\nwell as ward off the apparent threats to lives and property in the general<br \/>\narea. In the aftermath of the firefight that ensued, many of our troops<br \/>\nsustained varying degrees of injury. These injured troops are currently<br \/>\nreceiving treatment at our medical centre. Similarly, five members of<br \/>\nMASSOB\/IPOB were killed, eight wounded while nine were arrested for due<br \/>\nlegal actions,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ohaneze while condemning the killings said it was convening an emergency<br \/>\n&#8220;\u00cfmeobi&#8221; meeting to consider the next step to take.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe think it is inappropriate to use excessive force that will result in<br \/>\nthe death of so many people. We are going to convene an emergency meeting<br \/>\nof the Imeobi to know the next step to take,\u201d said the President-General<br \/>\nof the association, Chief Enwo Igariwey.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Speaking on the development, Ekweremadu drew the attention of the Senate<br \/>\nto the bloodbath in the South-east noting that in view of the bloodshed<br \/>\nwitnessed in the country, security agencies must apply caution in<br \/>\ncontaining peaceful rallies other than decimating young men and women.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cYesterday, I had a number of calls about the disturbing clashes between<br \/>\nyouths in different parts of the South-East, South-South and security<br \/>\nagencies, leading to the death of many people, both of the young men and<br \/>\nsecurity personnel.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt is important that we rise to condemn any act of killing in any part of<br \/>\nthis country, especially the ones that concern the major part of our<br \/>\nfuture, which remains the young men and women of this country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe are now in a democracy and people should be entitled to speak their<br \/>\nminds;
