… INAUGURATES\u00a0 GOVERNING COUNCIL\u00a0 Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu
\nstate has appointed Professor
\nAugustine Uchechukwu Nweze, as the new rector of the state-owned
\nInstitute of Management and Technology (IMT).\u00a0 The governor equally
\ninaugurated the new Governing
\nCouncil of the Polytechnic, which was reconsituted a few weeks ago.
\nInaugurating the council at the Executive Council chambers, Government
\nHouse, Enugu, Governor Ugwuanyi in his address noted that \u201cthe
\nreconstitution of the Council
\nwas made pursuant to Section 5 (1) of the Institute of Management and
\nTechnology Law Cap 97, Revised Laws of Enugu State of Nigeria, 2004. The
\ngovernor added that \u201cit was also in response to the urgent need to fill
\nthe vacuum created
\nin the administrative structure of the institution owing to the
\nabsence of the Council for many years\u201d.\u00a0 Those appointed into the new
\ncouncil include Dr. Festus Uzor who will
\nserve as chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Igiligi, Pharmacist
\nCyril Aniwike, Mr. David Sunday Onwuegbu and Prof. Gabriel O. Agbo. He
\nalso stated that \u201cthe Statutory members of the
\nCouncil as stipulated by the Law are the Rector of the Institute in
\nthe person of Professor Augustine Uchechukwu Nweze (who has just been
\nappointed), two nominees of the Academic Board of the Institution
\nnamely; Dr Mrs Ogoo Okanya and Dr Innocent Eze and the Permanent
\nSecretary of the State Ministry of Education. The governor further
\nexplained that \u201cthis administration as we do
\nknow, has since inception continued to place a very high premium on
\nthe improvement of the education sector, especially through the
\nrepositioning and revitalization of educational institutions at all
\nlevels.
\n\u201cAs a first generation Polytechnic, the Institute of Management and
\nTechnology, Enugu has been one of the prominent centres for manpower
\nand technological development in the country. \u201cIt is, however, the
\nintention of this administration to take the
\ninstitution to a much higher level and to restore it to its status as
\na leading centre for qualitative education and technological
\ninnovations. \u201cTowards this end, we have endeavoured to provide and improve
\nnecessary infrastructure and facilities in the school and we have
\nrecently set in motion, the process and machinery for its upgrading to
\na degree awarding institution\u201d, he stated. On the calibre of persons now
\nappointed into the board, the governor
\nsaid: \u201cWe have taken pains to select as members of this new Council,
\nindividuals of high academic and professional repute, experience and
\ncompetence, to drive our aspirations for the institution and bring
\nthem to fruition.
\n\u201cI am confident that they will deploy all their abilities and energies
\nto achieve these goals for the benefit of our children and the society
\nat large and I assure you that the Government will, as a matter of
\npolicy and obligation, support and partner with the Council in all
\nnecessary ways to ensure that it succeeds in its assignment\u201d, he
\nposited.
\nGov. Ugwuanyi thanked the outgoing Rector, Professor M.U Iloeje “for the
\nlaudable work he did for the school during his period of service” and
\nwished him greater success in his future endeavours.
\nResponding, the Chairman of the new Council, Dr. Uzor, who spoke on
\nbehalf of the
\nother members pledged to work assiduously and in line with the terms
