Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State Monday inaugurated the<\/p>\n
newly reconstituted State Board of Internal Revenue and charged the
\nmembers to come up with new and effective strategies aimed at beefing
\nup the State\u2019s revenue base in view of the present daunting economic
\nchallenges in the country.<\/p>\n
Lagos-based banker and luxury real estate operator, Mr. Chukwuemeka
\nAnthony Odo, who is the chairman of Bluewaters Capital is the chairman
\nof the Enugu revenue board and pledged on behalf of other members of
\nthe new board to work diligently operate a leak-proof revenue
\ngeneration system for the state shore up its economy.<\/p>\n
While inaugurating the board at the Government House, Enugu yesterday,
\nGovernor Ugwuanyi explained that the charge on the members to work
\nhard on their assignment has become necessary in the face of the
\nsevere economic depression that is threatening the solvency of
\ngovernment at all levels.<\/p>\n
He noted that how well the new board plays its role was crucial to
\nthe economic wellbeing of the State government and by extension that
\nof the people of Enugu Sate.<\/p>\n
He observed that with the receipts from the federation account
\ndwindling rapidly, most State governments have become increasingly
\ndependent on internally generated revenue to fund their activities and
\nservice their obligations.<\/p>\n
\u201c Government as a result of the current economic condition, is
\nstruggling to meet its financial commitments to pay salaries, fund
\ndevelopment activities, ensure social services and maintain security,
\namong others\u201d, the governor stated.<\/p>\n
Governor Ugwuanyi pointed out that he had earlier envisaged this
\nsituation when he warned in his inaugural speech that revenue
\ngeneration agencies should be ready to intensify efforts to generate
\nmore revenues to fund government\u2019s developments efforts.<\/p>\n
He equally charged members of the board to ensure that all revenues
\naccruable to government are fully collected and all avenues of
\nleakages are effectively checked. The governor then called on
\nindividuals and corporate bodies not to fail in their obligations to
\npay their taxes.<\/p>\n
He promised that every kobo that accrues to government will be fully
\nutilized transparently and in a manner that will transform the life of
\nevery citizen of Enugu State.<\/p>\n
On his part, Odo, a former executive director of the defunct
\nIntercontinental Bank Plc, stated that their appointment came at a
\ntime when the crashed oil price has affected the economic fortunes of
\nthe country negatively, and assured that they will explore and exploit
\nall sources of internally generated revenue to ensure that government
\nmeets its obligations to the people.<\/p>\n
According to Mr Odo, members of the Board will ensure that all taxable
\npersons in the State are given the opportunity to perform their civic
\nobligations, while equally exploiting technology to block leakages so
\nthat all government revenues be fully collected.<\/p>\n
Other members of the board include Mr Chucks Onodugo member
\nrepresenting Enugu Westsenatorial zone, Mr Jude Sunday Egbo,
\nrepresenting Enugu East zone, Barr Joseph Onuoha, representing Enugu
\nNorth senatorial zone, and Mrs Chinasa Perpetuul Awkadigwe, a lawyer
