Governor Raugh Aregbesola’s move to Islamise\u00a0 Osun State education system
\nmet with stiff resistance from Christians especially missionary schools,
\nwho ordered their wards and students to go to school in choir robes and
\nrain coats.<\/p>\n
The development followed an earlier court judgement authorising female
\nmuslim students to attend lectures dorning hijab in missionary schools
\nother than the approved school uniforms.<\/p>\n
Students of secondary schools in the state showed up in school on Tuesday
\ndressed in choir robes, rain coats and hijabs which did not attract any
\nsanctions from the school authorities who are also caught up in the
\nreligious divide.<\/p>\n
Governor Rauph Aregbesola, a muslim, has, however, warned against students
\ndressing up in unauthorised uniforms. He threatened to expel students
\ninvolved in such practice.<\/p>\n
But students of Baptist High School, Iwo, exchanged banters and hailed
\neach other for coming to school in different religious garments and
\nmaintained cordial relationship with each other.<\/p>\n
Governor Aregbesola, who spoke during the commissioning of St. Michaels
\nGovernment Middle School, Ibokun, said it was wrong for a section of
\npeople to have directed some innocent students to wear choir robes to
\nschool against a court judgment.<\/p>\n
\u201cGovernment is not interested in any religion as being speculated. My goal
\nis to improve education standard in the state”, he said.<\/p>\n
But the Osun State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN)
\nrecently accused Governor Aregbesola of planning to islamise the state by
\nadopting the use of hijab as an instrument.<\/p>\n
Chairman of its youth wing, Mr Owo-Ofe Nicholas, said\u00a0 it would resist
\nAregbesola’s agenda to islamise the state.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe believe this is the process of Aregbesola Islamisation agenda in the
\nstate which was earlier stated in 2012 by the Directorate of Military
\nIntelligence and corroborated by OS-CAN in 2014. The Christian youths will
\noppose this dubious agenda.<\/p>\n
\u201cJustice Falola\u2019s judgement is simply a violation of religious rights of
\nthe original owners of Christian missionary schools as agreed upon when
\nthe schools were taken over by Oyo state government in 1975.<\/p>\n
\u201cImplementing the judgment will show the whole world that Aregbesola led
\nadministration is trying to disturb the peace that the state is enjoying.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want to call on all the security operatives, DSS, Police, Civil
\nDefence to advice the state government accordingly on the security
\nimplication of implementing such judgment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will like to emphasise that we are not challenging the right of muslim
\nstudents to wear hijab for the propagation of Islam in public schools.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we are saying is that this should not be extended to schools that
\nare originally owned by Christian missions as contained in the Osun State
\nNational Inter-Religions Council (NIREC) agreement of 2014.<\/p>\n
\u201cShould the State government decide to implement the judgement, the State
\nYOWICAN will mobilise and instruct all our YOUTHS in different Blocs and
\nschools to start wearing their Christian garments\u00a0 as part of their school
\nuniform for propagation of our faith.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are using this medium to ask Osun State Government not to implement
\nthe judgement of Justice Saka Jide Falola which he delivered on Friday 3rd
\nJune, 2016 that muslim female pupils in all public schools should be
\nallowed to wear hijab to schools without any harassment or molestation”,
