A group of Christians in Nigeria led by National Christian Elders Forum
\nhave condemned the extension of public holiday by the Federal Government
\nover the non-sighting of the moon during the just-concluded Eid-el-Kabir
\ncelebration by the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of Supreme
\nCouncil for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa\u2019ad Abubakar III.<\/p>\n

While insisting that the trend portends a dangerous precedent that the
\ngovernment of Muhammadu Buhari was taking instructions from the Sultan,
\nthe coalition said the government and Islamic leaders should repay the
\ncountry the extra day that was lost during the next Eid-el-Kabir “in which
\nwe expect that only one day should be approved as Public Holiday.”<\/p>\n

Key members of NCEF include Mr. Solomon Asemota (SAN) (Chairman); Gen.
\nJoshua Dogonyaro (rtd); Prof. Joseph Otubu, Gen. Zamani Lekwot (rtd), Dr.
\n(Mrs) Kate Okpareke, Dr. Ayo Abifarin, Bishop Joseph Bagobiri, Archbishop
\nMagnus Atilade, Elder Moses Ihonde, Elder Nat Okoro and Prof. Vincent
\nAnigbogu.<\/p>\n

Others are Gen. Ishaku Dikko (rtd), Justice Kalajine Anigbogu (rtd), Elder
\nShyngle Wigwe, DIG P. L. Dabup, Sir John W. Bagu, Dr. Saleh Hussaini,
\nElder Mike Orobator, Chief Olaniwun Ajayi, Justice M. Ogebe (rtd), Mrs.
\nPriscilla Kuye, Chief Debo Omotosho, Dr. Musa Asake, Joseph Daramola,
\nPastor Olatunbosun Emmanuel (Secretary).<\/p>\n

The coalition in a statement by Asemota obtained in Abuja, said it was
\nobvious that the All Progressives Congress (APC), which promised Nigerians
\nchange from the lawlessness and impunity that seem to characterise this
\ncountry, was drifting the country to a wrong direction.<\/p>\n

Apart from NCEF, other members of the coalition include Nigerian Christian
\nGraduate Fellowship; Think Tank for the body of Christ; Christian Lawyers
\nFellowship of Nigeria; Association of Christian Schools in Nigeria;
\nStudents Christian Movement; Christian Professionals Forum; Intercessors
\nfor Nigeria and and International Prophetic Ministerial Association (Inc.
\nWorldwide College of Bishops and Ministers: Africa, UK and USA.<\/p>\n

The coalition also has Intercessors Without Walls; Wailing Women
\nInternational; Full Gospel Businessmen Fellowship; Nigerian Fellowship of
\nChristian Students; Ministers Prayer Network; International Christian
\nEmbassy Jerusalem and University Joint Campus Christian Fellowship as
\nmembers.<\/p>\n

The statement by Asemota reads: “As Nigerians, we congratulate the Muslims
\nin the nation on their successful completion of the Ramadan fast in 2016.
\nHowever, we are disturbed by the apparent shoddiness and confusion the
\nFederal Government brought into the declaration of the Public Holiday
\nrounding up the Muslim religious exercise.<\/p>\n

“The Federal Government had earlier declared Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th
\nJuly as Public Holiday only to reverse itself and declare Wednesday 6th
\nand Thursday 7th July 2016 as Public Holiday. If this was done before
\nTuesday was observed as Public Holiday, it would have been tolerable but
\ndeclaring Thursday 7th as Public Holiday in addition to Tuesday and
\nWednesday is a mark of institutional unseriousness. The implication now is
\nthat three days would be work free in the week.<\/p>\n

“We are equally appalled that the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman
\nDambazau based the decision to declare Thursday as Public Holiday on the
\ndirective by the President General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for
\nIslamic Affairs, Alhaji Sa\u2019ad Abubakar III, the Sultan of Sokoto, to the
\neffect that the Ramadan fast continues today (last Tuesday) as a result of
\nthe non-sighting of the moon.<\/p>\n

“We are not aware that Nigeria has transmuted into a religious theocratic
\nstate in which the leader of a religious group issues directive to the
\nFederal Government. If the President General of the Nigerian Supreme
\nCouncil for Islamic Affairs confirmed Wednesday and Thursday as Public
\nHoliday for the Ramadan fasting, then who advised the Federal Government
\nto declare Tuesday a Public Holiday?<\/p>\n

“As innocuous as some people may want to present this development, it is a
\ndangerous signal confirming the worrisome direction of the party that
\npromised Nigerians change from the lawlessness and impunity that seem to
\ncharacterize this nation. Since the inception of the Buhari
\nadministration, it has left no one in doubt of its discriminatory leaning
\ntowards Islam as the preferred religion in Nigeria, in violation of
\nSection 10 of the constitution.<\/p>\n

“The Buhari Administration needs to be reminded again that Nigeria is not
\nan Islamic Theocratic State that receives \u201cdirective\u201d from a Sultan.
\nNigeria is a democratic and secular nation and preferential treatment
\nshould not be accorded any section of the nation but all should be treated
\nequally.<\/p>\n

“If indeed a mistake was made in declaring Tuesday a Public Holiday that
\ndoes not warrant declaring Thursday a Public Holiday. Both the Federal
\nGovernment and leaders of Islam should have maintained the statutory two
\ndays Public Holiday and learnt a lesson on how to not to repeat the
\nmistake in future.<\/p>\n

“It is very embarrassing the tardiness and shoddiness that the Buhari
\nAdministration has brought into governance in Nigeria. Decent and
\nrespectable people are ashamed at the flagrant acts of discrimination,
\nnepotism, and impunity of the APC led government.<\/p>\n

“We wish to state clearly that declaring Thursday an additional Public
\nHoliday is not only wrong but an insensitive approach to the management of
\nthe economy. The economic well being of the nation should not be
\nsacrificed on the altar of religious fervor.<\/p>\n

“Nevertheless, having illegally appropriated an additional day as Pubic
\nHoliday during the Eid-el-Fitri, the Federal Government and leaders of
\nIslam should be prepared to repay the nation the extra day during the next
\nEid-el-Kabir in which we expect only one day should be approved as Public
\nHoliday. Nigeria should not be turned into a lawless nation. The APC led
\ngovernment should call itself to order.<\/p>\n
