President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Abuja directed the Federal
\nMinistries of Health, and Information and Culture, to reinvigorate its
\nstrategies in concert with State governments, to ensure that Nigeria is
\nfinally certified polio free by 2017.<\/p>\n
Receiving the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for
\nAfrica, Dr Matshidiso Rebecca Moeti, at the State House, President Buhari
\nsaid international partnerships were also needed to sustain Nigeria\u2019s
\npolio-free status.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We have not recorded any case of polio in the last two years but we
\nshould not be complacent.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018The breakdown of law and order in the North East has posed challenges to
\nregular immunization.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018The situation and the condition of children in Internally Displaced
\nPersons camps around the country is very pathetic.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018But I know that the Federal and State governments in partnership with
\ninternational organizations and NGOs are doing so much to provide
\nhealthcare, rebuild infrastructure and facilitate voluntary return of
\ndisplaced persons to their communities,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The President told the visiting WHO envoy, who was accompanied by
\nNigeria\u2019s Minister of Health, Prof Isaac Adewole and the Minister of
\nState, Dr Osagie Ehanire, that his administration would continue to accord
\npriority to healthcare through regular funding of public health related
\nprogrammes.<\/p>\n
Under the Federal Government health intervention programme, the Federal
\nMinistry of Health will provide free surgery to 10,000 poor and needy
\nNigerians who are registered with the National Health Insurance Scheme.<\/p>\n
The programme, which will commence on July 18, in 46 health facilities
\nacross the country will also extend free breast and cervical cancer tests
\nto 18,000 Nigerians and free diabetes and hypertension tests for 500,000
\nNigerians.<\/p>\n
In her remarks, Dr Moeti commended the Federal Government\u2019s health
\nprogramme and pledged continued support of the organization on health
