{"id":51154,"date":"2016-07-13T16:38:50","date_gmt":"2016-07-13T15:38:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=51154"},"modified":"2016-07-13T16:38:58","modified_gmt":"2016-07-13T15:38:58","slug":"halliburton-fayoses-lawyer-replies-buharis-wife-justifies-claim-involvement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/halliburton-fayoses-lawyer-replies-buharis-wife-justifies-claim-involvement\/","title":{"rendered":"Halliburton: Fayose\u2019s lawyer replies Buhari\u2019s wife, justifies claim of her involvement"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\":n8\" class=\"ii gt adP adO\">\n<div id=\":oy\" class=\"a3s aXjCH m155e4d0e984146f8\">\nCounsel to Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State, Chief Mike Ozekhome<br \/>\n(SAN) has replied the wife of President Mohammadu Buhari, Mrs Aisha<br \/>\nBuhari through her counsel, Mary Ekpere &amp; Co, justifying the<br \/>\ngovernor\u2019s claim that Mrs Aisha Buhari was indeed mentioned in the<br \/>\nHalliburton scandal.<\/p>\n<p>In the letter dated July 8, 2016, Ozekhome affirmed that the statement<br \/>\nmade regarding the involvement of Mrs Aisha Buhari in the Halliburton<br \/>\nscandal was \u201ccorrect and justified in law, having regards to a court<br \/>\njudgment convicting one Mr William Jefferson for bribery in the<br \/>\nHalliburton case.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Counsel to the president\u2019s wife, Mary Ekpere &amp; Co had written a letter<br \/>\ndated June 22, 2016, to Governor Fayose, demanding a retraction of the<br \/>\ngovernor\u2019s statement that the President\u2019s wife was involved in the<br \/>\nHalliburton scandal, threatening legal action if the retraction was<br \/>\nnot made <span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1049568354\"><span class=\"aQJ\">within five days<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>However, Ozekhome said the statement of Governor Fayose was correct<br \/>\nand justified, having been factually premised on an existing court<br \/>\njudgment.<\/p>\n<p>The letter read; \u201cOur client has referred to us your letter dated 22nd<br \/>\nJune, 2016, on alleged defamation of the character of your client ,<br \/>\nHer Excellency, Mrs Aisha Buhari, the wife of Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,<br \/>\nwith firm instructions to reply to and reject same in its entirety.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur client states and reaffirms categorically that the statement he<br \/>\nmade as regards the involvement of Mrs Aisha Buhari, the wife of<br \/>\nPresident Buhari, in the Halliburton scandal, is correct and justified<br \/>\nin law; having regards to a court judgement convicting one Mr William<br \/>\nJefferson for bribery in the Halliburton case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTherein, the name of the President\u2019s wife featured conspicuously. At<br \/>\npage 22 of the said judgment delivered by the United State District<br \/>\nCourt, Eastern District of Virginia, Alexandria Division, USA, in<br \/>\ncriminal No 1: 07CR209, the said Mr William Jefferson was sentenced at<br \/>\n<span class=\"aBn\" tabindex=\"0\" data-term=\"goog_1049568355\"><span class=\"aQJ\">9.00 am<\/span><\/span> on November 13, 2009, by Mark D, Lytle. Your client, Mrs Aisha<br \/>\nBuhari was specifically mentioned in the judgment. The judge referred<br \/>\nto Exhibits 36-87 in the following words, for clarification;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSee also Government Exhibits 36-87 (6\/26\/02 $170,000 wire transfer<br \/>\nfrom account in Nigeria in the name of Aisha Buhari to an account in<br \/>\nthe name of The ANJ Group, LLC, identifying \u201cWilliam Jefferson\u201d as<br \/>\nBeneficiary)\u2026 Given the age of the defendant, the severity of the<br \/>\nsentence calculated by the Probation Office, the defendant\u2019s frequent<br \/>\ntravel overseas and unexplained wire transfers from overseas locations<br \/>\nto financial accounts used by the defendant, the defendant cannot<br \/>\nrebut the presumption at sentencing that he is a risk of flight.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe said Williams Jefferson is currently serving a jail term in the<br \/>\nUSA and to the best of our client\u2019s knowledge; this judgment has not<br \/>\nbeen challenged, or set aside by any Appellate court of law anywhere<br \/>\nin the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe statement of His Excellency, our client, is therefore correct and<br \/>\njustified, same having been factually premised on an existing court<br \/>\njudgment above referred to.\u201d<br \/>\nOn the immunity enjoyed by Governor Fayose against civil and criminal<br \/>\nproceedings, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria said; \u201cYour attention is<br \/>\nalso hereby drawn to Section 308 of the Constitution of the Federal<br \/>\nRepublic of Nigeria, 1999, as altered, on the immunity enjoyed by our<br \/>\nclient from civil or criminal proceedings for the period that he<br \/>\noccupies the office of the governor of Ekiti State.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou may therefore advise your client to wait until after 16th<br \/>\nOctober, 2018, when our client\u2019s tenure expires.
