Following the constitution of an 11-man Committee on Local Government Staff Audit and Biometrics Data Capturing by Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State on July 23, 2015, the Committee has submitted its report, uncovering a total of three thousand, nine hundred and sixteen (3,916) ghost workers in the system.<\/div>\n
Presenting the report to the governor at the Government House, Enugu, the Chairman of the Committee and Speaker of Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Edward Ubosi also revealed that the government has saved a total of One hundred and sixty one million, four hundred and ninety four thousand, five hundred and seventy naira (N161, 494, 570) only, found to be the difference in the wage bill after the exercise.<\/div>\n
While giving a breakdown of the figures, Ubosi said: \u201cFrom the above, the sum of (N64, 882, 033) sixty four million, eight hundred and eighty two thousand, thirty three naira, and Ninety six million, six hundred and twelve thousand, three hundred and thirty seven naira, twenty kobo (N96, 612, 337.20) only, from local government staff gross salaries and teacher salaries respectively should be regarded as monthly savings.\u201d<\/div>\n
The committee in its 26 recommendations to the state government for consideration, recommended the disengagement of workers found to have falsefied their age records; those employed contrary to the civil service rules and those found to be impersonators in the system.<\/div>\n
It also recommended that more teachers be engaged in the primary schools in the state as well as general posting of local government staff after the exercise to re-engineer more discipline in the system.<\/div>\n
In his response, Gov. Ugwuanyi thanked members of the Committee for a job well done, adding that the report will go a long way in assisting his administration in its efforts to track down ghost workers and instil fiscal discipline in the state public service.<\/div>\n
It would be recalled that the governor while inaugurating the Committee, last year, said that the audit exercise was targeted at helping his administration to identify and flush out ghost workers as well as plug all avenues of leakages and wastages that had hitherto weighed down the finances of the Local Government Councils in the state.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
