Recently, at a small private event, I overheard a very important figure in
\nNigerian politics and in the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying:
\n\u201cAmaechi is one of the very few people that Buhari will give whatever they
\nwant\u201d.\u00a0 Curiosity pushed me to ask the bigwig why he said that.\u00a0 \u201cAmaechi
\nbravely went through the \u2018Bermuda Triangle\u2019 of Nigerian politics during
\nthe 2015 elections, and had the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) won the
\nelections, Amaechi\u2019s story would have been better not told\u201d, he replied.<\/p>\n

If President Muhammadu Buhari\u00a0 will give Rotimi Amaechi, his Minister of
\nTransport, whatever he wants, reasons for this are definitely beyond just
\nbeing brave and resolute during the 2015 elections, but some other
\nqualities in governance; doggedness in the pursuit of what he believes in
\nand his\u00a0 sterling performance as Governor of Rivers states from 2007-2015.
\nAfter all, President Muhammadu Buhari is known as a man who is never
\ncarried-away by \u2018flashes\u2019 of politicking.<\/p>\n

Curious to know more about some hidden attributes of Amaechi that endears
\nhim to Mr. President considering Buhari\u2019s cautiousness in picking close
\npolitical allies, I contacted few people in government. Some who know
\nAmaechi and many that have followed and observed his way of doing things
\nsince his early political career as\u00a0secretary of the now defunct National
\nRepublican Convention (NRC) in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers
\nState; Special Assistant to the Deputy Governor of Rivers State, Dr Peter
\nOdili 1992-1994;\u00a0 Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly\u00a0 1999-2007 and
\nto his becoming the governor of Rivers state through his determination in
\nthe pursuit of his case up to the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n

Majority of them said Amaechi extremely abhors injustice, loves quality
\nleadership and always prefers putting the right people in the right jobs.
\nWell, these qualities including Amaechi\u2019s braveness before, during and
\nafter the 2015 politicking must have been the ones that attract President
\nBuhari to him.<\/p>\n

The appointment of Hadiza Bala Usman as Managing Director (MD) of Nigeria
\nPort Authority (NPA) has generated some grumbles from few quarters- many
\nsuggesting that, Hadiza was appointed because Amaechi and Governor
\nEl-Rufa\u2019i are friends and President Buhari will always give the duo
\nwhatever they want. Most people forgot that Hadiza Bala Usman is a young
\ngoal-getter in a class of her own and, Buhari is man of thoroughness and
\noperates in a style that Operations Research scientists call \u2018System
\nThinking\u2019- a serial approach to governance- where each development sector
\nis connected and will influence each other within a well-planned
\ngovernment. Amaechi\u2019s recommendation of Hadiza is purely based on Buhari\u2019s
\ncardinal belief which Amaechi also shares- the\u00a0need to bring on board
\nyoung adventurers, silicon-valley-like-thinkers; men and women who can
\nmove the government at the speed of the imagination of most Nigerians;
\nindividuals whose sense of judgement is centered on the challenges of
\nun-locking the future for ordinary Nigerians.<\/p>\n

All the persons Amaechi recommended to President Buhari are individuals
\nwho know their onions and what is expected of them. They know they are
\ncalled to rebuild a system that will shift governance away from the
\ntraditional method of concentrating on only ‘off-the-shelves’ way of
\nimproving our society. They will not saddle themselves with mundane
\nissues; but would rather be team players who bring new and feasible ideas
\nthat will trigger development in all spheres of the society. These people
\nwill help put in place, systems that will bring dynamism into governance.<\/p>\n

Ameachi has proven to be one of those ministers that will make Buhari\u2019s
\ncabinet an engine-room to provide broad variety of services to Nigerians,
\nranging from health to industrial development, security, a sound legal
\nsystem, and the provision of effective infrastructure; education system
\nand human capital development.<\/p>\n
