{"id":51312,"date":"2016-07-19T06:25:31","date_gmt":"2016-07-19T05:25:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=51312"},"modified":"2016-07-19T14:07:43","modified_gmt":"2016-07-19T13:07:43","slug":"mend-buhari-suspend-charges-tompolo-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/mend-buhari-suspend-charges-tompolo-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Mend To Buhari: Suspend Charges Against Tompolo, Others"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>\u2026.Constitutes dialogue team headed by Ajumogobia<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, has urged the<br \/>\nFederal Government to drop the charges against ex-warlord,\u00a0 High Chief<br \/>\nGovernment Ekpemupolo, alias Tompolo and free Henry Okah and Charles Okah,<br \/>\nboth in jail in South African and Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>According to MEND, this is only way to facilitate the peace process in the<br \/>\noil rich but troubled Niger Delta region.<\/p>\n<p>This is contained in a memo to President Muhammadu Buhari , saying that it<br \/>\nhad constituted the final list of its Aaron Team 2 and urged government to<br \/>\nkick-start the peace process by contacting their leaders, Mr. Odein<br \/>\nAjumogobia, SAN and HRH King Alfred Diette-Spiff.<\/p>\n<p>MEND\u2019s spokesperson , Jomo Gbomo in the memo said: \u201cThe Movement for the<br \/>\nEmancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) hereby submits the final list of<br \/>\nmembers of the Aaron Team 2 dialogue, peace and development initiative<br \/>\ninaugurated by MEND on June 12, 2016 to find sustainable solutions to the<br \/>\nNiger Delta crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019Members of the apolitical team include: Mr. Henry Odein Ajumogobia, SAN<br \/>\n(Rivers \u2013Team Leader), HRH King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff, Amayanabo<br \/>\nof Twon-Brass (Bayelsa \u2013 Deputy Team Leader &amp; Representative of the Niger<br \/>\nDelta Dialogue and Contact Group \u2013 NDDCG), Senator Florence Ita-Giwa<br \/>\n(Cross River \u2013 Representative of all aggrieved militant groups and<br \/>\ncommunities from the Bakassi axis and. Mr. Ledum Mitee, Esq. (Rivers)<br \/>\nOthers are Senator Adolphus Wabara (Abia \u2013 representative of oil-bearing<br \/>\ncommunities in Abia and Imo states), High Chief Government Ekpemupolo<br \/>\n(Delta state), Mr. Ibanga Isine (Akwa Ibom), Mr. Alfred Isename (Edo) and<br \/>\nMr. Timipa Jenkins Okponipere, Esq. (Bayelsa \u2013 Team Secretary).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Leader of the Team, Mr. Henry Odein Ajumogobia is a Senior Advocate<br \/>\nof Nigeria and former Attorney General of Rivers state. He is also a<br \/>\nChartered Arbitrator, former Minister of State for Petroleum and former<br \/>\nMinister of Foreign Affairs. Mr. Ajumogobia, a man of unblemished proven<br \/>\nrecord, character and integrity is widely respected throughout the entire<br \/>\nNiger Delta region and he appreciates the problems and challenges facing<br \/>\nthe region. He is therefore our Chief Negotiator in the proposed dialogue<br \/>\nwith the Federal Government.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHRH King Alfred Papapreye Diette-Spiff was the first military governor of<br \/>\nthe old Rivers State and is currently, a 1st class traditional ruler in<br \/>\nBayelsa state. He is the Deputy Leader of the Aaron Team as well as the<br \/>\nrepresentative of the Niger Delta Dialogue and Contact Group (NDDCG). King<br \/>\nAlfred\u2019s immense popularity and wide acceptance across the Niger Delta<br \/>\nregion is an asset as Government seeks to tackle the current crisis in the<br \/>\nregion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cConsequently, the NDDCG, as the name connotes, shall serve as the contact<br \/>\nand clearing house for all mushroom and internet-based militant groups in<br \/>\nthe region; all aggrieved oil-bearing and coastal communities affected by<br \/>\nthe menace of oil spillage and related environmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201d The NDDCG shall also accommodate all repentant Niger Delta activists,<br \/>\nelders and tribal assemblies who actively supported the neglect and<br \/>\ncorruption perpetrated during the era of former President Goodluck<br \/>\nJonathan but who are now ready to join hands with your Government to bring<br \/>\npeace and development to the region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa from Cross River state shall be<br \/>\nrepresenting all Bakassi militant groups and aggrieved communities from<br \/>\nthat axis of the Niger Delta who see her as their mother. Former Senate<br \/>\nPresident Adolphus Wabara is in the Aaron Team to represent Abia and Imo<br \/>\nstates. He is widely respected across both states and shall deploy his<br \/>\nvast wealth of experience for the benefit of the dialogue, peace and<br \/>\ndevelopment initiative\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>MEND said\u00a0 Tompolo\u00a0 was pivotal in the entrenchment of enduring peace\u00a0 in<br \/>\nN-Delta saying that his\u00a0 inclusion in the final list was principally<br \/>\nbecause of the key role he continues to play in the Niger Delta as a<br \/>\nnotable ex-militant leader; philanthropist; traditional title holder and<br \/>\nmobilizer of amazing capacity.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019It will therefore be counter-productive if the Federal Government<br \/>\nignored such an individual who may be capable of talking to the militants<br \/>\nin the creeks to ceasefire.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It added: \u201cWe are very much aware of the pending criminal charges against<br \/>\nGovernment Ekpemupolo by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission<br \/>\n(EFCC). However, we strongly advise that the charges be suspended until<br \/>\nafter the conclusion of the Aaron Team assignment. This is to ensure that<br \/>\nMr. Ekpemupolo devotes his time, energy and resources towards the<br \/>\nresolution of the current Niger Delta crisis without any fear of arrest,<br \/>\nintimidation or harassment\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Continuing, the group said: \u201cYour Excellency, the MEND Aaron Team 2<br \/>\ndialogue and peace initiative would not have materialized if not for the<br \/>\ntireless work and support of the Okah brothers \u2013 Henry and Charles who are<br \/>\ncurrently in prisons in South Africa and Nigeria, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c It is our humble submission that the release of the Okah brothers is a<br \/>\ncrucial factor in the peaceful resolution of the Niger Delta crisis. If<br \/>\nSenator Ali Ndume facing terror charge for sponsoring Boko Haram can be<br \/>\ngranted bail by the Judiciary and thereby permitted to participate in<br \/>\nnation-building at one of the highest levels as Majority Leader of the<br \/>\nSenate. Then, we see no reason why the Okah brothers that have enormous<br \/>\ncapacity to help government end the Niger Delta crisis would still held in<br \/>\nprison.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSir, cases abound in history where prisoners were released from prison to<br \/>\nhelp save the nation in times of crises. Examples include the likes of the<br \/>\nHebrew slave Joseph, who was released from prison to help save ancient<br \/>\nEgypt from famine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNelson Mandela was also released from prison in 1990 to help restore<br \/>\nmulti-racial democracy in South Africa in 1994.
