Former Head of state , General Yakubu Gowon (retd), yesterday, took a
\nretrospective look at the situation in the country and asked President
\nMuhammadu Buhari to ensure that the country\u2019s economy regain its strength
\nto alleviate the suffering of the masses.<\/p>\n

Gowon spoke at Ile-Ife at a programme, Health Caravan and Award ceremony
\nfor the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, who was conferred with the Royal
\nAmbassador for Hepatitis Advocacy in Nigeria by the Seham Health Care
\nFoundation as part of activities to commemorate the 2016 World Hepatitis
\nDay.<\/p>\n

Fielding questions from newsmen shortly after the award ceremony, Gowon
\nurged Nigerians to cooperate with the government, saying that the Federal
\nGovernment was doing everything within its reach to resolve the economic
\nchallenges facing the nation.<\/p>\n

On solution to Nigeria\u2019s economic challenges, Gowon said, \u201cLet the current
\nauthority find a way out of the current economic crisis. The Minister of
\nFinance, Kemi Adeosun, has been telling us what they have been doing to
\nget the economy strong again. She said all will be well by September.
\nLet\u2019s wait till then.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have left government for a long time, so I may not really know what the
\nproblem is. The current administration should do whatever they can to
\nsolve to economic challenges. They should find a way to restore confidence
\nin the citizens and the nation at large by fixing the economy.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the controversial budget padding which resurfaced, the elder statesman
\nwondered why the issue of budget padding became the order of the day in
\nNigeria, saying such never occurred during his administration. He,
\nhowever, urged government not to allow anyone found guilty of budget
\npadding to go scot free to serve as deterrent to others.<\/p>\n

His words: \u201c If that is true. If anybody is doing that, the person should
\nbe checked and stopped to ensure that such does not occur in the future.
\n\u201cWe didn\u2019t do it during my time. We had Chief Obafemi Awolowo in-charge of
\nour finance and he taught us to survive without borrowing. Such (budget
\npadding) should stop, there is no point doing that\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n

Receiving the award, the Ooni urged Nigerians to ensure that they support
\nthe less privileged in their domain. He expressed delight at being awarded
\nand called on Nigerians to cultivate the habit of celebrating good
\nleaders.<\/p>\n

On her part, the Executive Secretary of Seham, Princess Adepeju Hameed,
\nexplained that since the formation of the foundation, the rate of
\nHepatitis has reduced in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

She noted that the Ooni was awarded to deepen the awareness about the
\ndisease and its control.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
