Advocacy for Integrity and Economic Development (AIED), a non-governmental
\n-organisation known for anti-corruption crusade, has approached a Federal
\nHigh Court in Lagos State for an order compelling the Nigerian Drug Law
\nEnforcement Agency (NDLEA) and the Attorney General of the Federation to
\narrest and extradite Senator Buruji Kashamu to the United States for
\ndrug-related charges against him.<\/p>\n
A series of court injunctions in favour of Senator Kashamu last year
\nprevented the anti-narcotics agency, which literally kept vigil at the
\nLagos residence of the Ogun East senator, from arresting and extraditing
\nthe Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain.<\/p>\n
But AIED in a fresh suit filed on Tuesday said Kashamu\u2019s protection by the
\nFederal Government was hampering efforts by President Muhammadu Buhari to
\nhave past indicted government officials and stashed stolen funds returned
\nto Nigeria.<\/p>\n
The NGO noted that non-extradition of the Ogun East senator, after a court
\napplication for his repatriation \u201chas been frustrated till date,\u201d was a
\nviolation of Extradition Treaty which has strained the relationship
\nbetween both countries. Joined with the NDLEA and AGF as defendants in the
\nsuit number FHC\/L\/CS\/1045\/2016 are the PDP, the US Embassy and the Senate.<\/p>\n
Also being sought is an order compelling the PDP and the Senate to notify
\nthe NDLEA and AGF of the presence of Senator Kashamu\u2019s at the August 17
\nconvention of the party slated for Port Harcourt, Rivers State and the
\nSenate chambers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat under the laws of the United States, Senator Kashamu has been
\nindicted with the charges of drug trafficking. That Senator Kashamu has
\nbeen described by the United State Government as the kingpin of a drug
\ncartel.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat Senator Kashamu has over the years been avoiding entrance to the
\nUnited States to avoid arrest and subsequent prosecution. Senator Kashamu
\nabsconded and remains a fugitive in United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cBased on the foregoing international agreement between the two countries
\nthe United States government applied to the Nigerian government for the
\nextradition of Senator Kashamu which application has been frustrated till
\ndate.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat the current anti-corruption crusade of the President Muhammadu
\nBuhari-led administration is being undermined and threatened by the
\nfailure of Nigeria to live up to her international treaty obligations with
\nthe United States.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat this failure to comply with international obligation has dissuaded
\nthe United States government from taking steps to grant the Nigerian
\ngovernment\u2019s request for extradition of alleged corrupt individuals for
\nprosecution and effective repatriation of stolen public funds,\u201d a document
