The Customs Comptroller General, Col Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd) has
\nexpressed his delight with automation efforts by agencies of the Federal
\nGovernment desirous of perfecting operational processes in line with their
\nmandates in the maritime industry.<\/p>\n
Speaking through his representative at the Command Control Communication
\nand Intelligence System launched, the Zonal Coordinator Zone \u2018A\u2019,
\nAssistant Comptroller General of the Nigeria Customs Service, ACG Eporwei
\nCharles Edike said that, the Comptroller General of Customs Lauded the
\nlaunch by the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA, of the CCCIS, just
\ncommissioned by the minister of transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi.<\/p>\n
According to the Edike, automation of Ports Operational process by Federal
\nGovernment agencies are in line with Government’s vision towards changing
\nthe old ways of doing business to modern, technology driven processes
\ndevoid of human interferences\/manipulations. This, he said will save time,
\ncosts and reduce delays often caused by officials in a bid to be very
\nthorough in their jobs.<\/p>\n
In the words of the zonal coordinator, “the CCCIS is an additional effort
\nand will enable the Nigerian Navy monitor midstream discharge of
\nun-manifested cargo by vessels on Nigeria waters. Movement of vessels will
\nalso be monitored with greater precision to avoid loss of revenue by the
\nfederal government.<\/p>\n
The Nigeria Customs believes that the CCCIS will complement other
\nautomations already installed and being used by other agencies like the
\nNigerian Navy which has been assisting Customs on vessel monitoring within
\nNigerian waters.<\/p>\n
Other agencies like the Standards Organization of Nigeria, SON, the
\nNigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA and others. The
\nShippers Council as port Economic Regulator is also making efforts at
\nautomation that will improve sea port operations.<\/p>\n
Edike stated that \u201cby the time all these systems are fully integrated,
\nport services will become seamless, highly efficient. Revenue leakage will
\nalso reduce drastically”.<\/p>\n
Though each federal government agency has its mandate and specific duties,
\nthe CCCIS is a welcome development by the Nigeria Customs Service. Edike
\ndescribed it as a technological tool deployed by NPA for improved maritime
\noperations across the country. He noted that all citizens should be proud
\nof the initiative and support it.<\/p>\n
The ACG also called for greater collaboration and synergy between federal
\ngovernment agencies as they strive to actualize the dictates of their
\nrespective mandates.<\/p>\n
