Former military president, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, has called for a part<\/p>\n
time legislature in order to cut the cost of governance in the country.<\/p>\n
Babangida made this call on Tuesday while addressing newsmen at an event
\nto mark his 75th birthday\u200e in Minna.<\/p>\n
He said\u200e although, a proposal by his regime to make the National Assembly
\npart time in 1989 never came to fruition, he still strongly believed in
\nit.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn 1989, we proposed that the National Assembly should be made part time
\nand I still believe if I have the opportunity, I will make it part time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI strongly believe in it and it is all in the effort to reduce the high
\ncost of governance\u200e and I know I may be in trouble for suggesting part
\ntime legislature,\u201d he said On how he felt on hearing the rumour of his
\ndeath in the media, the former military leader said that he was not
\nsurprised as it was not new.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe first thing that came to my mind\u200e was that it is not new; they did it
\nto Nnamdi Azikiwe, they did it to Shehu Shagari and other elder statesmen,
\nso it\u2019s not a surprise.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a Muslim, whether I like it or not I must die someday and so they are
\njust stating the obvious but nobody knows the\u200e time or place that It will
\nhappen,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Babangida also stated that he was not the evil most people thought he had
\nbeen, explaining that by virtue of his profession, he was bound to be
\nmisconstrued.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am not the evil quite a lot of you think that I am and I can understand
\nthat by virtue of the job I was doing, I was bound to be misunderstood.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut I consider it all as an opinion and it is one of those things you
\nhave to live with but as long as I am not what you thought I was, I feel
