{"id":52633,"date":"2016-08-26T06:26:53","date_gmt":"2016-08-26T05:26:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/?p=52633"},"modified":"2016-08-26T06:27:20","modified_gmt":"2016-08-26T05:27:20","slug":"igp-risks-jail-oyo-monarch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pointblanknews.com\/pbn\/exclusive\/igp-risks-jail-oyo-monarch\/","title":{"rendered":"IGP Risks Jail Over Oyo Monarch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Inspector General of Police, has been summoned by a Federal High Court<br \/>\nsitting in Ibadan, Oyo state, to come before it and explain why he should<br \/>\nnot be punished for flagrant disobedience to an order of court in a case<br \/>\ninvolving the Oyo monarch, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi.<\/p>\n<p>Contempt proceeding were filed before the court on August 22, 2016 wherein<br \/>\nit was argued that the IGP had constantly ignored the order of court to<br \/>\ninvestigate allegations brought against Oba Adeyemi.<\/p>\n<p>Form 48 from the court was served on the IGP in June last year, warning<br \/>\nhim of the consequences of disobeying court order.<\/p>\n<p>In the Form 49, served on August 22, the incumbent IGP was asked to show<br \/>\ncause why he ought not to be punished by imprisonment after his office<br \/>\nrepeatedly disobeyed court order.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are hereby required to attend the court on the first mentioned day to<br \/>\nshow cause why an order for your committal should not be made&#8221;, the court<br \/>\npaper read.<\/p>\n<p>The matter emanated from Justice Ayo Emmanuel Court, which on December 15,<br \/>\n2014 granted an order of mandamus, following an ex parte motion, brought<br \/>\nbefore it by Jacob Oluokun and Sulaiman Ishola, seeking an order mandating<br \/>\nthe Police to investigate criminal allegations against Adeyemi.<\/p>\n<p>The allegations are contained in a March 18, 2014 petition to office of<br \/>\nthe IGP.<\/p>\n<p>The petition titled: \u201cUnprecedented criminality, flagrant human rights<br \/>\nviolations, bomb planting, gun running and unresolved assassinations in<br \/>\nOyo town, Oyo state\u201d was delivered to the IGP\u2019s office on April 17, 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The application for mandamus with the suit No: FHC\/IB\/CS\/54\/2014 was filed<br \/>\nat the Federal High court, Ibadan, by the applicants\u2019 counsel, Biodun<br \/>\nAbdur-Raheem on July 16, 2014, two months after the police declined<br \/>\nactions on the petition.<\/p>\n<p>Messrs. Oluokun and Ishola, are from Isale-Oyo community with which the<br \/>\nAlaafin has been at loggerheads since 1992, when the head of the<br \/>\ncommunity, Amuda Olohunosebi, then the Ashipa of Oyo land, was allegedly<br \/>\nmurdered.<\/p>\n<p>But almost two years after the court gave its order, the Nigerian Police<br \/>\nis yet to comply.<\/p>\n<p>According to petitioner\u2019s counsel, \u201csuccessive IGPs have refused to obey<br \/>\nthe order (to investigate the Adeyemi) even after two letters of reminder<br \/>\nhad been sent to him on January 5 and January 21.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has not been Police action despite preponderance of facts and<br \/>\nevidence which made the court to compel the Police to investigate the<br \/>\nmonarch in the first place\u201d Abdur-Raheem added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are now suing the Inspector General of Police for contempt of court\u201d,<br \/>\nhe told journalist<\/p>\n<p>Abdur-Raheem however alleged that the IGP may be shielding the said<br \/>\nmonarch because of his membership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n<p>According to the petitioner counsel, the Monarch, who ought to be father<br \/>\nto all in Oyo state, is a registered and card carrying member of the<br \/>\nruling APC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis membership of the APC may not be unconnected with reason the IGP is<br \/>\nshying away from executing the order of court.
