The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) on Tuesday said that instead of<\/p>\n
planning to increase the pump price of fuel, the Federal Government should
\nimprove people\u2019s living conditions.<\/p>\n
The TUC President, Mr Bobboi Kaigama and its Acting General-Secretary, Mr
\nSimeso Amachree, in a statement on Tuesday in Lagos, vowed to resist any
\nform of fuel increase above N145.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe economy is already on its knees. We suggest that the government
\nshould reduce the cost of governance and create a more friendly business
\nenvironment and jobs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe economy must be diversified. Government should set up an economic
\nteam that will create modalities of finding the way out of recession,\u2019\u2019
\nthe TUC said.<\/p>\n
It said that government should not consider any increase in pump price of
\nfuel, because the call for review of minimum wage for workers had not been
\nharkened to.<\/p>\n
\u201cFederal government had yet to fulfill its promises and agreement with the
\norganised labour during the May protest against hike in fuel price,\u2019\u2019 it
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The TUC said that life had become difficult for Nigerians and the current
\nminimum wage could no longer cater for many families.<\/p>\n
It urged government to enhance local production, build more refineries and
\nmaintain stability of foreign exchange for the economy to improve.<\/p>\n
TUC also advised the government to fulfill its promise based on which it
\ninaugurated a joint government-labour committee to determine the new
\neconomically realistic national minimum wage.<\/p>\n
The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Dr Ibe Kachikwu, said on
