The Council of State has approved the appointment of six new National
\nCommissioners for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and
\nfive National Commissioners for the National Population Commission (NPC).<\/p>\n
Gov. Akinwumi Ambode of Lagos State made this known in Abuja on Wednesday
\nwhile briefing State House correspondents on the outcome of the meeting of
\nthe Council of State.<\/p>\n
The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe deliberated on the appointment of six national commissioners for INEC,
\nyou know INEC is supposed to have 12 Commissioners.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had earlier approved six sometimes last year and additional six were
\nactually approved today.<\/p>\n
\u201c`And those six represent six nominees from the six geo-political zones.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou may wish to know that we approved five new commissioners for the
\nnational population commission, NPC in addition to what was actually
\napproved for INEC,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
He gave the names of the six INEC commissioners to include Alhaji Mohammed
\nHaruna (North Central); retired AVM Ahmed Tijjani Mu\u2019azu (North East); and
\nAbubakar Nahuce (North West).<\/p>\n
Othera are Prof. Okechukwu Ibanu (South East); May Agbamuche Mbu (South
\nSouth) and Dr Adekunle Ogumola from the South West.<\/p>\n
The NPC Commissioners, according to him, are Dr Eyitayo Oyetunji (Oyo);
\nPatricia Iyaya (Benue); Benedict Ukpong (Akwa Ibom); Dr Haliru Bala
\n(Kebbi) and Gloria Isofo from Bayelsa.<\/p>\n
He stated that the council had earlier approved six INEC commissioners in
\nOct. 21, 2015.<\/p>\n
The governor further revealed that the council was also briefed on the
\nstate of the economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe minister of state from the Ministry of Budget and Planning actually
\nmade a presentation to council on the ways and manner in which the Federal
\nGovernment is approaching the way to rescue the recession path that we are
\ngoing through.<\/p>\n
\u201cCouncil was confident and also approved the measures the federal
\ngovernment is putting in ensuring that Nigeria goes on the path of
\nrecovery as quickly as possible.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
Also addressing the correspondents on outcome of the meeting, Gov. Badaru
\nAbubakar of Jigawa disclosed that the Council and the Police Council had
\nratified the appointment of acting Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim
\nIdris.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe deliberated on the confirmation of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was almost unanimous acceptance of his confirmation. So, the Police
\ncouncil resolved to confirm the Acting Inspector-General of Police,
\nIbrahim Idris,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n
The council meeting was attended by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, state
\ngovernors, former Chief Justices of Nigeria (CJN) including Lawal Uwais,
\nDahiru Musdafa, Alfa Belgore and Alooma Muktar.<\/p>\n
The first meeting of the council under the current political dispensation,
