The revenue allocation formula should be restructured to ensure federating
\nunits get more allocation than the centre, Sokoto State Governor, Aminu
\nWaziri Tambuwal, has advocated.<\/p>\n

“There’s urgent need to review the allocation formula in the country
\nbecause doing so will strenghten the Nigerian federation and help to shed
\noff some of the excess powers the Federal Government currently has,” the
\nGovernor said in Sokoto Wednesday<\/span><\/span> when hosted various groups who paid him a
\nsallah homage.<\/p>\n

The groups include the Sokoto Chamber of Commerce, Industries, Mines and
\nAgriculture, Association of Resident Communities, Sokoto Women Association
\nand a Coalition of Non-Governmental Organizations, among others.<\/p>\n

Tambuwal added that the states and local government areas deserve more
\nallocation because they shoulder overwhelming responsibilities of the
\ncitizens of the country.<\/p>\n

According to him, states and the local governments are the closest tiers of
\ngovernment to the people, but they are getting less than the federal
\ngovernment’s allocation from the federation account.<\/p>\n

“The ugly trend should be reversed in favour of the federating units, to
\nenable them meet the overwhelming demands of the people at grassroots
\nlevel,” the governor added.<\/p>\n

Tambuwal disagreed with those advocating the “geographical” restructuring
\nof Nigeria, saying with good governance in place, all Nigerians will be
\nmade to have a sense of belonging.<\/p>\n

On Nigeria’s unity, Tambuwal said “We believe in the unity of the country
\nand the unity of Nigeria is non-negotiable. Dialogue is also the most
\npotent tool to resolve all problems, anywhere and at anytime.<\/p>\n

“There are really challenges in Nigeria, and it is not peculiar to the
\nnation, and these challenges are surmountable,” he said.<\/p>\n

Speaking to the members of the resident communities, Tambuwal described
\nthem as equal partners in running the affairs of the state.<\/p>\n

He also promised that, his administration would not discriminate against
\nanybody, irrespective of his tribe or religion.<\/p>\n

Tambuwal also challenged NGOs and various groups to offer constructive
\ncriticisms to the government.<\/p>\n

The President of the chambers of commerce, Alhaji Kabiru Tafida, as well as
\nthe chairman of the association of resident communities, Mr Augustine
\nOnumba, all hailed Tambuwal for his ” steadfastness” in governance.<\/p>\n
