\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 time . We are the ones we have been waiting for. We<\/em>
\nare the change that we seek”<\/em>
\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0-President Barack Obama<\/em><\/p>\n

We are in a season of change , no thanks to APC and its slogan ‘CHANGE’.
\nTruly and frankly speaking,\u00a0 a whole lot of things need to be changed, not
\njust the leadership and the ruling party . For we to effect the needed
\nchange there is need for systemic and systematic change, a lot of things
\nneed to give way, call it wholistic change in the leadership and
\nfollower-ship. The change we need is both top bottom and bottom up . A
\nchange of value system because our\u00a0 value system has been redefined ,
\ndistorted and mangled by greed ,avaricious tendency , selfishness and
\nstomach infrastructure. Over the years we have derailed into moral abyss.
\nNobody cares , nobody says stop , nobody says enough is enough , this
\nnonsense must stop.\u00a0 It has\u00a0 been a culture of\u00a0 ‘mpunity’ and impunity.
\nOur problems have not been wrong\u00a0 policy formulation! Nor lack of human
\nand material resources to move Nigeria to at least being a developing
\ncountry instead of least developed countries of the world as it currently
\nis, with the latter description all doors to being developed have been
\nshut by us , because despite our endowments we have not exhibited the
\nright attitude that will engender development by the leaders and the led.
\nIt has been corruption, corruption all the way, lawlessness , indiscipline
\nand disorderliness. The voice of corruption has reached heaven crying for
\nvengeance . It has been proliferated at all levels, across all ages,
\ngroups, sex, and social strata. It has not only eaten deep into the
\nfabrics our society but has torn the fabrics into shreds. It has been said
\na million times that ‘the problem is not in our stars that we are
\nunderlings but in ourselves’. Nigerians\u00a0 have this penchant for hacking
\ninto the system , beating it and short changing it. We have the
\npredilection, inordinate appetite and inclination to truncate any\u00a0 and
\nmaking most noble policy ignoble. Nigerians have dexterity in manipulating
\nand maneuvering the system for their own selfish interest . I have
\ncontinued to ask\u00a0 in frustration and total helplessness, for how long
\nshall we continue in this madness , profligacy ,lawlessness and impunity?
\nI feel we have dwelt on this mountain of profligacy , prodigality, for too
\nlong . It is time to advance, move forward and change, for it is only a
\nmad man that does one thing over and over again and expects a different
\nresult.I have listened to a number of discussions on the way forward ,
\nsome have postulated that the needed change must come from the leadership,
\nwhich I agree totally with but we also need a change of attitude , a
\nchange of mindset from the followers . There is a need for a total
\noverhauling of the system. A school of thought says that once the law
\nenforcement institution is strengthened , the followers\u00a0 have no choice
\nthan to shape in or shape out.\u00a0 However,when I was thinking about this
\nongoing controversy over which is more important ;strengthening
\ninstitutions or empowering people, I came to the conclusion that building
\nstrong institutions is good but empowering people is more important . What
\nI mean by empowering people is educating people for sustainable change. It
\nis not debatable ,for according to Lowe, ” all attempts to change attitude
\nand behavior involve educative process, since, I order to change people
\nmust first acquire fresh knowledge , insights and skills. We need both
\ntop-bottom and bottom up cleansing. All have sinned and come short of the
\nglory of The Lord . We need pervasive change from family, to offices ,
\nworkshops , markets, churches, mosques. We need change in the way we
\nthink, the way talk and the way do our things . Yes, in our daily
\nactivities, the way we drive, the way we enter buses, in the way okadas
\nand keke marwas do their business\u00a0 in the way we dispose our refuse and
\nprotect the environment. Men can show some decency by looking for the
\nclosest convenience to urinate and not to display their ‘ wares ‘in public
\nany where , any time they want to answer the call of nature. Talking about
\nwares, there is need for us to change the way we display our wares for
\nsales in the markets, we need not obstruct traffic any where because we
\nwant to sell our goods, we need not run after moving vehicle to sell or
\nhawk on the streets. The government has a lot to do in this regard by
\nprohibiting\u00a0 hawking , and providing employment for the hawkers, for the
\narea boys that stop vehicles, okadas, keke marwas\u00a0 to collect money
\n,endangering both their lives ,the lives of the drivers and the
\npassengers. We need not sell goods at refuse dumps or close to dirty
\ndrainage , it is neither good for our health nor for the environment . We
\nneed to change from selling fake products for original.<\/p>\n

We need attitudinal change. Our lifestyle is on the fast lane , everybody
\nwants to be the first, first\u00a0 to be admitted into institutions of learning
\nby any means, we want to be the first and only person that have arrived in
\nhis community, the first to get to his\/her destination ;that is the reason
\nyou see people crisscross from one lane to another, that is the reason the
\nexceed the speed limit ,that is why a lot of madness is exhibited on our
\nroads. The traffic light is not for Nigerians . The pedestrian bridges are
\nfor beautification of our roads, because most people do not use them.
\nDrivers on our roads do not respect pedestrian lines, if you are a
\npedestrian trying to exercise your right , the drivers will crush or you
\ncan wait for them to stop for till thy kingdom come (that is for a few
\nNigerians who know what zebra crossing is all about). Nobody wants to take
\nturns.
\nWe need to change our orientation\u00a0 to work and work attitude from
\nextrinsic value to intrinsic value for work especially government\u00a0 work.<\/p>\n

We need a change of perception , our perception of Nigeria , from
\nbelieving that\u00a0 Nigeria is irredeemable to believing that Nigeria can be
\ngreat. We need a change of perception of how we see government and
\ngovernment property. We need to change our attitude of helplessness and
\napathy to a more active participant that can help Nigeria out of this
\ndoldrums . Oh we need a change.<\/p>\n

The starting point is to believe that change is possible. You can be the
\nchange\u00a0 . Start from your immediate environment. You can be the
\ndifference. How can we effect this change ? From my own standpoint ,it is
\nthrough education that change is possible , not just schooling but
\nengaging people at different locations; homes, schools, churches,
\nmosques,clubs and social gatherings, town unions, organizations, using an
\narray of media. The use of social media will be indispensable , especially
\nfor our youth and for those who have access and can access information
\nthrough it. We need to catch them young and catch them old too. There is
\nthis hackney that\u00a0 ‘you don’t teach old dogs new tricks’ but from my
\nbackground and experience old dogs learn new tricks. We need orientation
\nand reorientation to unlearn , relearn and learn new values, attitudes and
\nbehavior .\u00a0 We shall remain undaunted\u00a0 in this task for change ; to set
\nNigeria free is a task for all.<\/p>\n

The National Orientation Agency has\u00a0 an onerous task to\u00a0 developing new
\nstrategies , re-strategize ,\u00a0 quadruple\u00a0 and\u00a0 intensify its activities,
\nefforts, programs and consciously , purposefully delineate its target
\ngroups and design specific programs that will suit and reach each of the
\ntargeted groups. The harvest is indeed plentiful, therefore , we need
\nchange agents , non-governmental organizations ,the should redirect their
\nefforts from HIV \/AIDS , EBOLA awareness programs\u00a0 (cure for HIV has been
\nfound and Ebola has gone and gone forever from our country)to value
\norientation and\u00a0 reorientation programs and let concerted efforts be
\nchanneled in this direction because the effects of bad behavior, bad
\nattitude and indiscipline\u00a0 , wrong values are deadlier,\u00a0 more debilitating
\nthan HIV \/AIDS and Ebola disease.<\/p>\n

Our president to seize the moment , hear him, we have an opportunity. Let
\nus take it. It is another opportunity for rebirth , to live again, to make
\nprogress, to change\u00a0 for the good of commonwealth and join the comity of
\ndeveloped nations. God has given us another opportunity we must not
\nignore, or take it for granted.<\/p>\n

We need to encourage our own dear president Muhammadu Buhari to drive this
\nchange to every stratum of the society for our own good, as my people
\nwould say ‘ ome mma na-emere onwe ya’ literarily translated, if you are
\ndoing good , you are doing it for yourself. Nevertheless , our president
\nshould have at the back of his mind what Woodrow Wilson said ” if you want
\nto make enemies, try to change something . A lot of enemies will be made.<\/p>\n
