President Muhammadu Buhari Monday in New York said that the
\nanti-corruption campaign of his administration and the economic programme
\nof diversification will significantly address the lack of job
\nopportunities and deprivation that make Nigerian youths vulnerable to
\nrecruitment by human traffickers.<\/p>\n
The President said this at the meeting on Modern Slavery hosted by the
\nPrime Minister of United Kingdom, Theresa May on the margins of the 71st
\nSession of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA71), at the residence
\nof the United Kingdom Permanent Representative to the UN.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are also investing more on infrastructure development, education and
\nhealth for our people. When the results of our efforts become manifest the
\nattraction of seeking greener pastures abroad will lesson,\u201d he declared.<\/p>\n
President Buhari commended the British Prime Minister for drawing the
\nattention of the international community to such a serious matter to
\ncoincide with a time that the global focus is on migration and refugee
\ncrisis.<\/p>\n
He therefore called for practical and innovative measures \u201cto address all
\nthe modern day human tragedies.\u201d<\/p>\n
The President noted that \u201cmore worrisome is the fact that human
\ntrafficking and modern day slavery have created a dangerous political
\neconomy of their own. In consequence, this international criminality is
\ndefined by the activities of human traffickers that lure unsuspecting
\nvictims into forced labour, inhuman treatment, money laundering and
\nprostitution.\u201d<\/p>\n
He said Nigeria \u201cis ready and willing to partner with other countries and
\ninternational organizations to confront this phenomenon. We have a strong
\ncommitment to combating the menace of modern slavery, and will redouble
\nour efforts to prohibit human trafficking, while providing succour to its
\nhapless victims.\u201d<\/p>\n
President Buhari assured his audience \u201cto count on the support of Nigeria
\nin dealing with this evil, which constitutes an unacceptable stain on
\nhuman dignity and conscience in the 21st century.\u201d<\/p>\n
On measures taken by the country against the evil practice, he said the
\nNational Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and
\nthe Nigeria Immigration Service have taken steps to establish a joint
\noperational Working Group to combat human trafficking and smuggling of
\nmigrants from the country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are aware of the challenge for Nigeria, but our resolve to combat it
\nis strong and unshakable,\u201d the President declared.<\/p>\n
President Buhari was accompanied to the high-level meeting by Geoffrey
\nOnyeama and Lt-Gen. Abdulrahman Danbazzau (rtd), the Ministers of Foreign
