The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) says it will soon convene a
\nmeeting with foreign airline operators over their alleged rejection of
\nnaira payment for flight tickets.<\/p>\n
Mr Sam Adurogboye, General Manager, Public Relations, NCAA, made the
\ndisclosure in Lagos on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Adurogboye confirmed that the NCAA had received complaints from some
\npassengers, adding that they had the right to make payments in naira.<\/p>\n
He, however, noted that the industry was facing some challenges,
\nparticularly the scarcity of foreign exchange and inability of foreign
\nairlines to repatriate their funds.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe truth is that the airlines are beginning to reject the naira because
\nof the special circumstances that they have found themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the BASA agreement, when you sell your tickets, you should be able to
\nrepatriate your money; but presently, the airlines are finding it hard to
\ntake their money home.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo this problem has arisen now and we are looking at how to find a
\nworkable solution to it.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe will be meeting with the airlines soon because this situation is
\nexceptional and we cannot just wield the big stick against them,\u201d
\nAdurogboye said.<\/p>\n
He said the Federal Government was also taking measures to ameliorate the
\nsubsisting foreign exchange issues, adding that the inability of the
\nairlines to repatriate their money was not deliberate.<\/p>\n
Some airlines are allegedly accepting payments made only with credit cards
\nor dollars.<\/p>\n
The practice however, contravenes the Central Bank of Nigeria\u2019s (CBN)
\nprerequisite guiding cost of products or services in Nigeria which directs
\nthat pricing of any product shall continue to be in Naira only.<\/p>\n
It is also contrary to the provisions of the Bilateral Air Services
\nAgreement (BASA) between Nigeria and other countries as contained in
