President Muhammadu Buhari says his administration will not allow Niger
\nDelta militants to hold the country to ransom.<\/p>\n
Buhari said this in his speech on the 56th independence anniversary of the
\ncountry.<\/p>\n
He also sympathised with\u00a0Nigerians over the current economic crisis,
\nsaying it would not last for long because he had already taken steps to
\nrevive the economy.<\/p>\n
\u201cA new insurgency has reared up its head in the shape of blowing up gas
\nand oil pipelines by groups of Niger Delta militants,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis administration will not allow these mindless groups to hold the
\ncountry to ransom.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat sense is there to damage a gas line as a result of which many towns
\nin the country including their own town or village is put in
\ndarkness?\u00a0\u00a0What logic is there in blowing up an export pipeline and as a
\nresult income to your state and local governments and consequently their
\nability to provide services to your own people is reduced?<\/p>\n
\u201cNo group can unlawfully challenge the authority of the federal government
\nand succeed.\u00a0\u00a0Our administration is fully sympathetic to the plight of the
\ngood people of Niger Delta and we are in touch with the state governments
\nand leaderships of the region.\u00a0\u00a0It is known that the clean-up of the
\nOgoniland has started.\u00a0\u00a0Infrastructural projects financed by the federal
\ngovernment and post amnesty programme financing will continue.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have however, continued to dialogue with all groups and leaders of
\nthought in the region to bring lasting peace.\u201d<\/p>\n
He admitted that there was hardship in the land, but implored Nigerians
\nnot to allow temporary problems to blind them from the \u201ccorrective course
\nhis government had charted for the nation\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said his administration had identified the country\u2019s salient problems
\nand was working hard at lasting solutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know that uppermost in your minds today is the economic crisis. The
\nrecession for many individuals and families is real. For some, it means
\nnot being able to pay school fees, for others it\u2019s not being able to
\nafford the high cost of food (rice and millet) or the high cost of local
\nor international travel, and for many of our young people the recession
\nmeans joblessness, sometimes after graduating from university or
\npolytechnic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI know how difficult things are, and how rough business is. All my adult
\nlife I have always earned a salary and I know what it is like when your
\nsalary simply is not enough. In every part of our nation people are making
\nincredible sacrifices.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut let me say to all Nigerians today, I ran for office four times to
\nmake the point that we can rule this nation with honesty and transparency,
\nthat we can stop the stealing of Nigeria\u2019s resources so that the resources
\ncould be used to provide jobs for our young people, security,
\ninfrastructure for commerce, education and healthcare.<\/p>\n
\u201cI ran for office because I know that good government is the only way to
\nensure prosperity and abundance for all. I remain resolutely committed to
\nthis objective.<\/p>\n
