A group of activists in the country under the aegis of Centre for Human
\nRights and Social Justice (CHRSJ) have declared that any corrupt Judge
\nfound guilty of corruption by the Court should serve a jail term of 7
\nyears in consonance with sections 98, 99 and 494 of the Criminal Code of
\nthe Federal Republic of Nigeria and Section 172 & 209 and part 5th
\nschedule, part 1 of section 6&8 of the amended 1999 Constitution,<\/p>\n
They also rejected the DSS approach in the arrest of few Judges of the
\nFederal High and Supreme Court over corrupt practices through the invasion
\nof their houses with unconventional weapons inimical to the code of
\nconduct of security agents.<\/p>\n
The activists advised President Muhammadu Buhari to extend its
\nanti-corruption crusade to the State Judiciary of the Federation where the
\ncorrupt practices have been nurturing to the highest ebb, stressing that
\nthe depth of the corruption in the nation\u2019s judiciary is enormous and
\nneeded to be curtailed frontally within
\nthe ambit of the law.<\/p>\n
The activists were drawn from; The Christian Awareness Mission
\nGroup(CAMG),Passengers Fundamental Rights Group(PATRGIA),The Islamic
\nPolitical Awareness Group(TIPAG),Centre for Social Justice and Equity of
\nNigeria(CESJEN),Veteran Groups for Operation Clean Crusade(VGOCC),
\nApata-Aiyeraye Social Political Volunteer Group(ASPVG), De-Mainstream
\nIndependent Group(DMIG) and Coalition Against Illegal Arrest & Unlawful
\nDetention (CAIA&UD).<\/p>\n
Others were; Centre for Constitutional Rights and Counter Corruption
\nCrusader, Save Lagos Group(SLG) ,The Conscience Mainstream(TCM),African
\nMasses Voices for Survival (AMVS),The Christians Youths for the Peoples\u2019
\nRights and Development(CYPRD),Islamic Movement for Muslims\u2019
\nRights(IMMR),Divine
\nNigerians Liberators for Peoples\u2019 Fundamental Rights(DNLPFR) and The
\nChristians Volunteers Groups for Good Governance in Nigeria(TCVGGGN).<\/p>\n
Speaking through its National Coordinator, Comrade Adeniyi, Alimi
\nSulaiman, at the end of their emergency meeting on the \u201cState of Nation\u201d,
\nthe group insisted that all the corrupt judges should not be allowed to
\nescape justice without minding whose ox is gored.<\/p>\n
They stated that the recent revelation by finding Millions of naira in
\ndifferent currencies in the residence of the arrested Judges by the DSS,
\nhad undermined the public confidence in the entire judicial system of the
\ncountry, adding that the revelation had also eroded the judiciary of its
\nintegrity with the notion that judiciary was the last hope of common man
\non the street.<\/p>\n
They urged President Buhari to take the cleanse of the judiciary and other
\nsector of the country of corrupt practices with utmost seriousness in line
\nwith the section of the fundamental law of the land (the Constitution) in
\nsection 15(5) that the State shall abolish all corrupt practices and abuse
\nof power, noting that the corruption should be fought to a standstill by
\nall and sundry.<\/p>\n
According to them \u201cThe fight against the cancer of corruption in Nigeria
\nshould be tackled frontally as the menace has affected every segment of
\nour society impeding the nation\u2019s socio-economic and political development
\nand growth.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo us,with the revelation from the operation of the men of the Department
\nof State Security Services (DSS) that millions of naira was met in the
\nhouses of the affected Judges. Thorough, credible and unbiased
\ninvestigation
\nshould be conducted into the whole saga and all the affected Judges should
\nbe prosecuted according to the law of the Land. But, by not following the
\nrule of law in the fight against corruption may capable of disturbing the
\nstruggle against the menace.<\/p>\n
\u201cBy now, the Judiciary, particularly, the Bench should purge itself of
\ncorruption which has been in the highest ebb in the arm of government
\nbecause with the happening in the judiciary today, our Country is going to
\nextinction. The Bench that are supposed to be in the vanguard of crusade
\nagainst corruption now, soiled its hand with the bribery scandal and no
\nfewer than Seventy\u2013Five percent (75%) of Nigerian Judges since 2007 are
\nbillion Judges through ill-gotten wealth. All the Judges that participated
\nin Election Petitions Tribunals since 2007 till date should be
\ninvestigated and after found guilty, their ill-gotten wealth and property
\nshould be confiscated to become the wealth and property of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The group urged Buhari to strengthen the anti-graft agencies, the Economic
\nand Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Independent Corrupt Practices
\nand Other Related offences Commission (ICPC) , stressing that perpetrators
\nof the corrupt practices, had developed new parameters in their financial
