The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says what it achieved<\/p>\n
within the last 11 months in terms of looted asset recovery surpassed its
\nfirst 12-year record.<\/p>\n
Its Acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu, made the fact known when a team of
\nparticipants at the National Management Course of the Pakistani National
\nSchool of Policy visited him in Abuja on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have achieved a lot in terms of recovery of looted funds and property
\nin the past 11 months more than was achieved in the last 12 years of the
\nexistence of the commission.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have had many challenges but for me, my main motivation is the
\npolitical goodwill we enjoy,\u201d Magu said in a statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy men are determined and committed to work. Most importantly, the
\ngovernment is also ever ready to support us,\u201d he added.
\nMr. Magu was appointed acting chairman of the EFCC on November 9, 2015,
\nmaking him the fourth helmsman of the commission.
\nOn June 4, the Federal Government released a list of recovered stolen
\nfunds broken down as N78 billion, $185 million dollars, 3.5 million pounds
\nand 11,250 Euros.<\/p>\n
According to the government, the funds were recovered between May 29, 2015
\nand May 25, 2016.<\/p>\n
The EFCC boss told his guests that the anti-corruption campaign of the
\nPresident Muhammadu Buhari administration was total, geared towards
\nbringing the nation\u2019s economy back on track.<\/p>\n
He said the commission, under his leadership, had upped the ante in the
\nfight against graft with remarkable success.
\nHe said that in order to check corruption amongst staff, the commission
\ncreated a Department of Internal Affairs, DIA, charged with the
\nresponsibility of vetting intending staff.<\/p>\n
According to him, the DIA also investigates staff, receives petitions from
\nthe public concerning its personnel and makes sure all staff members
\nmaintain integrity.<\/p>\n
The leader of the eight-man delegation and director at the NSP, Irum
\nBukhari, said the visit was to enable the team to learn from EFCC.
\n\u201cWe want to know your composition, your success stories and the laws that
\ngovern your activities as we also strive in our country to fight
\ncorruption, extremism and terrorism,\u201d he said.
\nMr. Bukhari explained that the delegation comprised top civil servants who
\nhad served the Pakistani government for many years.
\nShe said they were at EFCC \u201cto study and improve themselves in order to
\nhandle key positions in the decision making of our country\u201d.
\nShe expressed optimism that the visit would further strengthen the
\nbilateral relations between Nigeria and Pakistan.
