Prof. Akintunde Ibitayo Akinwande, nominated for the Chairmanship of
\nNigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), says he will honour an
\ninvitation for screening by the Nigerian Senate after clearing with his
\ncurrent employer, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), U S A.<\/p>\n
In a letter, dated 26th October, 2016, to the Chairman of the Senate
\nCommittee on Power, Steel Development and Metallurgy, Sen. Enyinnaya
\nAbaribe, sent through the Special Adviser to the President on National
\nAssembly Matters, Sen. Ita Enang, Prof. Akinwande said he did not turn
\ndown the offer by President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n
The Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science explained that:<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018News reports in Nigeria that I have rejected President Buhari’s
\nnomination to be Chairman of Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission
\nhave been brought to my attention.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018I have the greatest respect for President Buhari. I am fully behind the
\nchange he has brought and is bringing to the way Government business is
\nconducted in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018I am deeply honored that Mr. President and his team thought me worthy
\nfor this important national assignment and sought me out for it.\u00a0 I\u00a0 am\u00a0 a
\ntenured\u00a0 professor\u00a0 of\u00a0 electrical\u00a0 engineering\u00a0 at\u00a0 the\u00a0 Massachusetts
\nInstitute\u00a0 of\u00a0 Technology.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018As such I am contractually\u00a0 constrained\u00a0 to\u00a0 seek\u00a0 formally\u00a0 the
\nconsent\u00a0 of\u00a0 the\u00a0 university\u00a0 for\u00a0 a\u00a0 leave\u00a0 of\u00a0 absence\u00a0 before
\npresenting myself to the Senate for screening and if confirmed take on the
\nassignment.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
