A pro-democracy group, Coalition in Defence of Nigerian Democracy and
\nConstitution (CDNDC), has appealed to the judiciary to truthfully and
\nfairly deploy\u00a0 the constitution in defence of democracy at this critical
\nmoment in Ondo state and prevent anarchy that could truncate democracy in
\nNigeria.<\/p>\n
“We fear that the rising tension in Ondo State, especially against the
\nbackdrop of the 1983 experience, is capable of truncating this democracy,
\nexcept the judiciary comes to the rescue,” CDNDC warned in a statement by
\nits co-convener, Mr Ariyo-Dare Atoye.<\/p>\n
The group expressed sadness that a major political incident that led to
\nthe fall of the second republic in 1983 is gradually building up in the
\npolity, warning that only the emplacement of electoral Justice could save
\nthe current democratic journey.<\/p>\n
According to the group: “The failure of the Independent National Electoral
\nCommission (INEC) to defend democracy and do what is right and just to
\npolitical parties, is creating serious tension in the land and threatening
\nour democracy.<\/p>\n
“With every sense of responsibility, we state that the latest electoral
\ninsurrection by INEC in illegally and wickedly substituting a validly
\nnominated candidate for a meddlesome interloper and a busybody who
\narm-twisted the Judiciary to obtain a fraudulent order must never be
\nallowed to stand by the Judiciary.<\/p>\n
“The onus is now on the Judiciary to stand up for justice as the last hope
\nof the people to defend this democracy, because what INEC has done, has
\npainfully created a loophole for desperate and wicked politicians to
\nexplore to the detriment of our democracy and elections.<\/p>\n
“If we allow this electoral travesty to stand, it will consume all of us
\nand our democracy will fall. The bigger picture of what is happening in
\nOndo State will undermine civil rule and we don’t want this to happen.<\/p>\n
“We are sincerely urging the Judiciary to redeem the situation in Ondo
\nState and ensure that justice is done to the people on the rightful
\ncandidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).<\/p>\n
“INEC has acted wickedly by replacing a validly nominated candidate of the
\nPDP, whose primary election it observed and approved, with a busybody who
\nplotted a kangaroo election in Ibadan under darkness and who is still a
\nmember of the Accord Party (AP).”<\/p>\n
CDNDC however urged President Muhammadu Buhari to caution INEC against
\nsabotaging the electoral process, noting that the security implications of
\nwhat the commission is doing is “a big burden on the nation and a major
\nchallenge to the President.<\/p>\n
“Mr. President also has a sacred duty to prevent INEC from sabotaging our
\nhard earned and hard sustained democracy. We must never allow democracy to
