The inaugural set of 200,000 unemployed graduates already selected in the<\/p>\n
first batch of the N-power volunteer job and training scheme of the Buhari
\nSocial Investment Programmes should start work in the next two weeks.<\/p>\n
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN made this disclosure over the weekend
\nwhile speaking at the Apostolic Coalition Summit in Lagos.<\/p>\n
According to him as a stop gap measure, the Buhari administration is
\nengaged in direct creation of jobs, including the plan to create 500, 000
\njobs for unemployed graduates.<\/p>\n
He explained that the programme should have commenced “as at October \u00a031,
\n2016, but is delayed on account of the fact that we are trying to get \u00a0as
\nmany of \u00a0the equipments that we require,” referring to the tablets that
\nwould be given to all the 500,000 N-power undergraduate participants.<\/p>\n
The Vice President also explained that efforts are being made “to ensure
\nthat all across the country, we are able to provide \u00a0those opportunities
\nas we promised.”<\/p>\n
Already 200,000 unemployed Nigerians have been selected, including 150,000
\nwho would teach and serve in their communities. The balance is made up of
\n30,000 who would serve as Agric Extension Workers and 20,000 who would
\nserve as public health workers.<\/p>\n
Each of the unemployed graduates would get a N30,000 monthly stipend, and
\nalso get an electronic tablet that would be packaged with several
\napplications that would train and empower the participants.
\nVice President reiterated that the N-Power scheme was launched as a
\nvolunteer programme “to create temporary opportunities for \u00a0young
\ngraduates, to at least be doing \u00a0something \u00a0and many of them would be
\nvolunteer \u00a0teachers, health officials and extension workers, who will earn
\na stipend.”<\/p>\n
He added that the participants will also have a device \u00a0“and that device
\nhas a lot of training \u00a0brochures, different \u00a0forms of training \u00a0brochures
\nand it’s also a device that \u00a0enables them to be able to, on a continuous
\nbasis, learn different \u00a0things, some \u00a0code-writing, some entrepreneurial
\nskills. There are lot of varieties of material that can be learned on the
\ndevice. The device is also a means \u00a0of \u00a0communicating \u00a0with them wherever
\nthey may be in the country.”<\/p>\n
He noted that “at the moment close to a million \u00a0graduates \u00a0have
\nregistered on the \u00a0volunteered scheme and we should be doing the \u00a0first
\n200,000 in the next 14 days or so, we should be able to get started with
\nthe first 200,000 across the country.”<\/p>\n
While the federal government would pay the 200,000 directly, state
\ngovernments would play an active role in their deployment to the needed
\nareas. The first batch of 200,000 selected volunteers are also being
\nscreened using the BVN so as to properly set-up the payment of their
