Northern youth groups have strongly condemned the harassment of Nigerian
\ncitizens by the Turkish authorities, urging President Muhammadu Buhari
\ngovernment to take measures to protect the rights of citizens in the
\nDiaspora.<\/p>\n
In a statement jointly signed by the<\/p>\n
Chairman, Arewa Defence League, Murtala Mohammed, and that of Northern
\nEmancipation Network, Abdulazeez Suleman, the groups noted that \u201cAs
\npatriotic Nigerians we are worried by the developments in Turkey that led
\nto the harassment of innocent Nigerian students in that country.\u201d<\/p>\n
The groups added that \u201cIn view of this unsavory development, we wish to
\nstate our position as follows:
\nWe condemn in strongest terms the use of state agents to intimidate our
\ncitizens pursuing legitimate academic careers.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe suspect that the action of the pro-government forces in Turkey to take
\nout their political frustration on innocent Nigerian students is in a
\ndesperate bid to further a controversial political agenda of expansionism.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe were shocked by the recent account of one of the victims \u2500 Hassan
\nDanjuma Adamu who told thecable news that he was imprison in Turkey and
\nnow suffering mental disturbance.\u201d<\/p>\n
The statement further that the groups were deeply touched by the recent
\nintimidation of innocent students, coming a few months after the
\nHonourable Minister of Education refused to submit to the call for the
\nclosure of private Turkish businesses in this country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe find it unfathomable that all of these actions of the pro-government
\nforces in Turkey is coming some months after an unsuccessful propaganda
\nthat our country\u2019s shadow had loomed behind what is now known as a phantom
\ncoup in that country.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe call on the Federal Government to take appropriate measures in
\nensuring that our citizens are henceforth never intimidated or harassed in
\nany part of the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have seen international media records of massive human rights abuses
\nin that country and the sustained effort to clamp down on the opposition,
\nnotably the media, civil society, peace promoters like the Hizmet Movement
\nand we frown at all these. The Amnesty International report on the
\nsituation in Turkey is alarming.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe also commend the Honourable Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu
\nfor not allowing our nation to be dragged into a replay of the dictatorial
\nschemes in Turkey by leaders who are driven by hunger for absolute power.
\n\u201cExtending the expansionist designs of the Turkey regime to our nation is
