Members of the Shiite Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) on Monday<\/span><\/span> morning
\nclashed with the police in Kano.
\nA witness said the clash started around Tamburawa, on the outskirts of
\nKano city, when the police tried to stop a Shiite protest.
\nOver a dozen people including a police officer are feared killed from the
\nviolent clash.
\nThe police have since deployed heavily armed mobile police officers to the
\narea while the major Kano- Zaria road is completely blocked.
\nThe IMN had late on Sunday<\/span><\/span> accused Nigerian soldiers of plotting to block
\nits members heading to Kano from Yobe State while also planting weapons on
\nthem.
\n\u201cSoldiers mounted a checkpoint at the outskirts of Potiskum, Yobe state,
\nprobably to stop members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) from
\nleaving the town to join others in this year\u2019s annual Arbaeen Trek to
\nZaria, mourning the martyrdom of Imam Husain (AS) scheduled to commence
\nfrom Kano this week,\u201d Ibrahim Musa, a spokesperson for the group said in a
\nstatement emailed to PREMIUM TIMES.
\n\u201cThe soldiers detained a trailer carrying the personal belongings of those
\ngoing to Kano for the trek today.
\n\u201cApparently, the soldiers have some sinister motives as they were
\noverheard scheming to plant weapons in the luggage and thereafter claim
\nthat these bags with the weapons belong to members of the IMN.
\n\u201cThroughout the nearly four decades of the existence of the IMN, it has
\nnever stockpiled, carried or used weapons. It never had any cause to, even
\nin the face of provocation.
\n\u201cIMN therefore wishes to alert the general public over this evil plot, and
\ncategorically reject and disown any attempt by the security services to
\nplant any fake evidence against members of the Islamic Movement (IMN).\u201d
\nThe spokesperson for the army, Sani Usman, could not be reached to comment
