Former Governor of Ekiti State and Minister of Mines and Steel<\/p>\n
Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has given a seven-day ultimatum to a
\nmember of Ekiti State\u00a0 House of Assembly, Dr Samuel Omotoso, and Special
\nAssistant on New Media and Public Communications to Governor Ayodele
\nFayose,\u00a0 Mr Lere Olayinka, to retract libellous statements against him in
\na live television programme\u00a0 aired on the state television\u00a0 on July 6,
\n2016.<\/p>\n
In a letter on behalf of the minister from the Law Chambers of\u00a0 R.O.
\nBalogun &Co, dated November 19th,\u00a0 Dr Fayemi is asking both Omotosho and
\nOlayinka to make a retraction and public apology, which must be given
\nequal prominence like the offending statements and utterances.<\/p>\n
They are also to pay Fayemi N100m for the offending statement within the
\nperiod, failure of which an action would be filed against them in the law
\ncourt.<\/p>\n
The duo of Omotoso and Olayinka had during a live programme on\u00a0 Ekiti
\nState Television (EKTV) tagged Ejiire on July 6, 2016, alleged that Dr
\nFayemi illegally took N1.5billion from Ekiti treasury and gave it to
\nPresident Mohammadu Buhari, while contesting the presidential election on
\nthe platform of\u00a0 the All Progressives Congress (APC).<\/p>\n
They also alleged that Fayemi looted Ekiti treasury, alleging fraud in the
\npurchase of vehicles for traditional rulers\u00a0 and illegal withdrawal of
\nN852million\u00a0 SUBEB money .<\/p>\n
Olayinka had said during the programme that “Fayemi paid Ekiti N852m into
\nSUBEB account at Access Bank, and now this is the fraud he committed:\u00a0 It
\nwas this money that qualifies Ekiti to receive Abuja\u2019s N852m SUBEB money,
\nbut immediately the money dropped into Ekiti SUBEB account, Fayemi just
\nwithdrew the state counterpart fund from the SUBEB account and Abuja SUBEB
\ncaught them red-handed in the fraud game, just like 419.”<\/p>\n
Olayinka also said that Fayemi illegally collected N5billion\u00a0 from Ecobank
\nin the name of Fountain Holdings for purported road construction.<\/p>\n
He also alleged that Fayemi borrowed money on behalf of the state to build
\na Government House for his wife and children. He also alleged that Fayemi
\nspent the state’s funds to build a private university for himself in
\nGhana.<\/p>\n
Omotoso said Fayemi refused to pay pensioners, but was “acting like armed
\nrobber and carted away Ekiti money”, adding that he was not “just saying
\nit for fun that Fayemi stole Ekiti money, but he went away with Ekiti
\nmoney and destroyed the economy of the state”.<\/p>\n
But\u00a0 Fayemi in a letter by his lawyer, Chief R.O. Balogun, has demanded a
\npublic apology with the same prominence they committed the offence,
\nretraction of the offensive comment and payment of N100m\u00a0 within seven
\ndays of receipt of the letter, otherwise they would be sued\u00a0 for criminal
\ndefamation of character.<\/p>\n
The Minister had complained through\u00a0 his counsel that their utterances
\nduring the programme portrayed him as a very corrupt public office holder
\nand fraudulent person who siphoned public funds at the detriment of Ekiti
\ncitizens while serving as governor.<\/p>\n
He also complained that he was exposed to “public ridicule, odium,
\nopprobrium, embarrassment and unprecedented disrepute”, arguing that the
\nduo had done “incalculable and tremendous injury to his image and
\npersonality as an international figure”.<\/p>\n
Balogun said if within seven days the defendants refused to comply with
\nthe demands, his client would have no choice than to drag them to court to
