President Muhammadu Buhari welcomes the appointment of the Minister of
\nEnvironment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, to join the next United Nations
\nSecretary-General Antonio Guterres as his Deputy.<\/p>\n
Speaking with the in-coming Secretary- General, Mr Guterres who called to
\ninform President Buhari of his decision to name Mrs. Mohammed as the
\nDeputy Secretary-General earlier this evening, the President used the
\nopportunity to reiterate his support and congratulations to Mr. Antonio
\nGuterres on \u00a0his upcoming tenure in the service.<\/p>\n
He endorsed the excellent selection of Amina J. Mohammed as the next
\nDeputy Secretary General of the United Nations.\u00a0“By her appointment,
\nNigeria has been honored,” said the President.<\/p>\n
President Buhari thanked Mrs. Mohammed for her untiring contribution to
\ntransform Nigeria and said he looks forward to sustained collaboration
\nbetween the UN and Nigeria. He said he had no doubt that she will continue
\nto make Nigeria proud at the global level.<\/p>\n
It is expected that the Minister of Environment will be transitioning to
\nher new role in March 2017. In the meantime, it is expected that she will
\ncontinue to lay strong foundations with various important ongoing
\ninitiatives critical to the government’s success in the Environment
\nsector.<\/p>\n
These include, but not limited to implementation of our Nationally
\nDetermined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Climate Agreement, the
\nsuccessful launch of the Sovereign\u00a0 Green Bonds in 2017, the ongoing Ogoni
\ncleanup and development of the Great Green Wall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
