The National leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, (CAN) on<\/p>\n
Friday expressed sadness over the manner the federal and state governments
\nare handling the Southern Kaduna killings.<\/p>\n
CAN described President Muhammadu Buhari\u2019s silence on the matter as sad
\nand unacceptable.<\/p>\n
Briefing journalists in Abuja on the crisis in Southern Kaduna, CAN
\nNational General Secretary, Rev. Musa Asake, said although the church in
\nNigeria has been subjected to a \u201csystemic genocide and persecution through
\nthe instrumentality of Boko Haram, which has killed thousands of
\nChristians and destroyed churches and over 50,000 houses since 2009, the
\ncurrent unprecedented onslaught against Christians in southern Kaduna by
\nIslamic fundamentalists disguising as Fulani herdsmen had reached an
\nalarming stage.\u201d<\/p>\n
The continuous killings, Asake said had shown that the Kaduna State
\ngovernment \u201clacks the will power to arrest the situation and bring it
\nunder effective control.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe know that southern Kaduna has been under 24-hour curfew daily as
\ndirected by the governor, yet the enemies of the people are still prowling
\ngoing from house to house killing defenseless people without government
\nprotection,\u201d the body said.<\/p>\n
CAN, he said has declared January 8, 2017 as national day of mourning by
\nChristians including those in diaspora, adding that all Christians must
\ndress in mourning attire of black clothes or dresses in all church
\nservices.<\/p>\n
He said, \u201cI have been directed by the President of the Christian
\nAssociation of Nigeria (CAN), Rev. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle to bring to
\nyour attention the ongoing ethnic\/religious cleansing of Nigerian
\nChristians in general and those of southern Kaduna in particular in the
\nlast few weeks.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile we commend President Muhammadu Buhari for waging war against Boko
\nHaram fundamentalists since his assumption of office, his silence on the
\nongoing genocide in the last few weeks speaks volume of the perceived
\nofficial endorsement of the dastardly and ungodly acts.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe recent defense of the President\u2019s silence that the President has
\nreceived briefing from the governor of Kaduna State on the matter is
\nunacceptable, because the Presidency knows that the people of the affected
\narea had already protested the governor\u2019s unacceptable biased handling of
