Hon. Kennedy Njoku , who was elected yesterday as the Speaker of the Abia
\nstate State House of Assembly, has resigned.<\/p>\n
Though information about his resignation is still very sketchy as at the
\ntime of filing this report, it was gathered that Njoku\u2019s election may have
\nnot gone well with some stakeholders in the state.<\/p>\n
Political stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa bloc where the impeached Speaker,
\nMartin Azubuike, hails from are said to have been bitter with the election
\nof Njoku who represents Osisioma Ngwa North constituency.<\/p>\n
Njoku\u2019s election meant that the old Obioma Ngwa federal constituency has
\nproduced the governor, Speaker of the State Assembly, Senator for Abia
\nSouth and the member representing Obingwa\/Osisioma Ngwa\/Ugwunagbo federal
\nconstituency.<\/p>\n
It was gathered that Okezie Ikpeazu has been engaged in several meetings
\nsince last night trying to calm frayed nerves from Isiala Ngwa federal
\nconstituency who felt betrayed by Azubuike\u2019s impeachment.<\/p>\n
Until his impeachment yesterday, Azubuike had survived four impeachment
\nplots against him spearheaded by son of the former governor and now
\nmajority leader, Chinedum Orji , the deputy Speaker, Cosmas Ndukwe and
\ndeputy majority leader, Solomon Akpulonu, as well as the member for Umuahia
\nEast, Chukwudi Apugo, as allies.<\/p>\n
Pointblanknews.com learnt that Governor Ikpeazu had preferred Chikwendu
\nKalu representing Isiala Ngwa South constituency as Azubuike\u2019s replacement
\nbut a cabal led by\u00a0 Chinedum Orji, was alleged to have chosen to elect
\nNjoku who as one of their own.<\/p>\n
According to a PDP member of the Assembly who spoke to Pointblanknews.com
\non the condition of anonymity, \u201cThe governor had to intervene after anger
\narose from the Isiala Ngwa bloc over the loss of the speakership position.
\nAt one of the several midnight meetings convened after a burial at the
\ngovernor\u2019s village yesterday, it was agreed that the stakeholders should
\nreach out to the new speaker, Njoku to resign his position for peace to
\nreign. Chikwendu Kalu was chosen as the new speaker. There would have been
\ncrisis If Njoku had insisted on remaining speaker. \u201d<\/p>\n
Rumours are rife in Abia political circles that the crisis in the
\nleadership of the Assembly may not be unconnected with an alleged
\nSpeakership ambition of the son of the former governor, Theodore Orji and
\nnow, Majority Leader of the House, Chinedum Orji who is believed to be the
\nman behind Azubuike\u2019s impeachment.
