Tens of thousands of women yesterday descended on Washington D.C and
\nLondon as part of the estimated 2.5million worldwide expected to march
\nagainst the new US President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n
Their grouse with Trump was what they perceived as his anti-women
\nutterances and actions underlined by his fat-shaming a former beauty
\nqueen, sex assault allegations and a controversial stance on abortion.<\/p>\n
The women marchers wanted \u201ca united proactive international stance on
\nwomen\u2019s equality worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n
Some 673 sister marches were planned worldwide, according to Women\u2019s March
\non Washington website.<\/p>\n
The marches spanned all 50 U.S. states, several U.S. territories and at
\nleast 60 countries across all seven continents.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt was clear from week one this was going to be a global movement,\u201d said
\nEvvie Harmon, co-founder and global coordinator of the Women\u2019s March on
\nWashington.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like the women of the world were sitting on a powder keg and Donald
\nTrump lit the match.\u201d<\/p>\n
As women in pink \u201cpussyhats\u201d flooded into metro stations overflowed as
\ntrains packed to bursting moved cheering, clapping marchers into the city
\nfor a record-breaking inauguration-related protest.<\/p>\n
\u201cI want to protect our rights,\u201d declared 72-year-old Trisha Norman, who
\ncame all the way from North Carolina to show that \u201cwhen people are
\nstanding together, they will be strong.\u201d<\/p>\n
Women made up the overwhelming majority of the people who emerged whooping
\nand cheering from Washington\u2019s Union Station, arriving on jam-packed
\ntrains and buses.<\/p>\n
Many carried homemade signs. \u201cKeep your tiny hands off me,\u201d said one.
\n\u201cRise, Love, Resist,\u201d read another.<\/p>\n
The incoming tide of women in knitted pink hats flushed through a city
\nthat the day before had welcomed throngs of Trump supporters in red \u201cMake
\nAmerica Great Again!\u201d caps for the Republican\u2019s swearing-in to a four year
\nterm.<\/p>\n
Heavy traffic was also reported coming from Northern Virginia and Maryland
\ninto Washington D.C. and multiple parking garages began to fill up as
\npeople arrived from surrounding states for the march.<\/p>\n
The march, which began as a movement on Facebook, quickly spawned more
\nthan 600 \u201csister marches\u201d in major U.S. cities outside of Washington D.C.
\nand international marches in Sydney, Hong Kong, London, Rome and Paris.<\/p>\n
More than 25,000 people gathered in London carrying signs and donning pink
\n\u201cpussy hats\u201d to advocate rights for women, migrants and the LGBTQ
\ncommunity and protest the nationalist ideas touted by Trump during his
\ncampaign.<\/p>\n
Nearly 200 protesters gathered outside of the U.S. embassy in Manila a
\nburned a U.S. flag with Trump\u2019s face and shouted \u201cDump Trump\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis protest is in solidarity with the American people, because their
\nincoming president is a fascist and a racist who is against immigrants,\u201d
\nRenato Reyes Jr. of militant group Bagong Alyansang Makabayan said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTrump will uphold the interests of the businessmen, not the people.\u201d
\nThe London march began at the American Embassy at midday and ended at the
\nfamous Trafalgar Square.<\/p>\n
