A civil rights group- HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA
\n(HURIWA) has warned the Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki of the grave
\nand imminent danger in going ahead with the plot to now accept and confirm
\nIbrahim Magu as Chairman of EFCC after thoroughly indicting him based on
\ncredible security reports.<\/p>\n
The Rights group has averred that the Senate Leadership runs the risk of
\nunwittingly turning the National Legislature into a mere paper tiger and
\nan appendage of the Executive arm of government should the hierarchy
\nallow the Volta face and shameless turn-around \u00a0to accept again Alhaji
\nIbrahim Magu for reconfirmation as substantive Chairman of the Economic
\nand Financial Crimes Commission EFCC).<\/p>\n
HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA believes that converting the
\nNational Assembly members into stooges of President Muhammadu Buhari by
\nthe inconsistent and contradictory readmission for the purposes of
\nconfirmation of a man who the Senate rubbished his integrity and
\ncredibility could be one more step towards authoritarianism.<\/p>\n
HURIWA said Nigerians should hold the Senators responsible should
\nconstitutional democracy collapse in the face of the emerging dictatorial
\ntendencies of President Muhammadu Buhari including the blatant disrespect
\nby \u00a0the Presidency for the powers of the Court system in Nigeria
\nguaranteed under section 6 of \u00a0the Constitution of the Federal Republic of
\nNigeria \u00a0of 1999 (as amended).<\/p>\n
The group in a statement to the media jointly issued by the National
\nCoordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs
\nDirector Miss. Zainab Yusuf submitted that already President Muhammadu
\nBuhari had used the Department of State Services to harass the Judiciary
\ninto cowardly submission.<\/p>\n
According HURIWA President Muhammadu Buhari \u00a0had \u00a0on three occasions
\nrefused to respect binding orders granted by the Courts of Competent
\nJurisdiction in cases involving erstwhile National Security Adviser
\nColonel Sambo Dasuki; Indigenous people of Biafria’s Nnamdi Kanu and
\nShiites Islamic Movement ‘s Sheikh ElZaczakky. These brazen disobedience
\nof the competent courts which is an impeachable offence is so grave just
\nas the Right group is lamenting that the Legislative sacrilege about to be
\ncommitted by the Senate in the reconfirmation of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman
\nof EFCC after the damaging security reports surfaced could spell doom for
\nconstitutionalism.<\/p>\n
HURIWA submitted therefore that the ongoing trade-off between the Senate
\nleadership and the Presidency would whittle down the constitutional
\nprinciples of separations of power and would effectively reduce the
\nLegislative Arm of Government as slaves of the power seeking executive arm
\nof government.<\/p>\n
“Does the National Assembly lack self respect that it has decided to
\nrevisit its vomit by the subterranean \u00a0readmission for confirmation of
\nAlhaji Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of EFCC after the Nigerian public were
\ntold in black and white that the security reports from the Department of
\nState Services clearly indicted Ibrahim Magu as a man who allegedly has
\ndouble life and fraternises with suspects undergoing investigation by the
\nEFCC that he heads as acting Chairman? This moral recapitulation and
\nsubmission will cost the National Assembly the remaining respect it has
\nenjoyed in the eyes of rational human beings globally “.<\/p>\n
HURIWA recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari has again presented the
\nname of Ibrahim Magu, the current acting chairman of the Economic and
\nFinancial Crimes Commission (EFCC), as his nominee for the substantive
\nchairmanship of the anti-graft agency.<\/p>\n
