The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. David Nweze Umahi, has called\u00a0 for the
\nFederal Government intervention in settling the \u00a0 hostilities \u00a0 between
\nthe people of Azuofia Idda in Izzi Local Government Area of the state
\nand Ohene in Cross River State.<\/p>\n
He made the call when the General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Enugu,
\nMaj.-Gen. Adamu Abubakar, came to brief him on the outcome of the
\nsurveillance of the two communities at the Government House, Abakaliki on
\nSaturday evening.<\/p>\n
Umahi ,who\u00a0 noted that lingering boundary dispute\u00a0 between the two
\ncommunities\u00a0 required action and commitment of the Federal Government and
\nthe two states, \u00a0\u00a0 advocated\u00a0 security meeting where the military
\ncommanders of both states and heads\u00a0 other security agents would be in
\nattendance .<\/p>\n
He said, ” The\u00a0 problem between Cross River and Ebonyi is quite known\u00a0 and
\nunfortunately, the problem of boundary in our country is quite funny.
\nNobody is really taking any definite action.<\/p>\n
“I believe strongly believe\u00a0 that we need political will; we need
\ncommitment to solve the problem. I will plead that since the Cross River
\ncommand is also under you(GOC), let’s have\u00a0 an\u00a0 interaction between the
\ntwo commanders as\u00a0 quickly\u00a0 as possible. The same thing with the police. I
\nwill speak\u00a0 with the IG about it.”<\/p>\n
While the governor\u00a0 promised to visit the area \u00a0 to know the extent of
\ndestruction and how to provide social amenities for\u00a0 the people, he said
\nthat a\u00a0\u00a0 police post\u00a0 would be established in the Ebonyi\u00a0 axis\u00a0 of the
\nborder.<\/p>\n
Umahi, according a statement on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Emma
\nAnya,\u00a0 enjoined\u00a0 the Cross River State government \u00a0 to do the same \u00a0 in
\norder to protect lives and property in the areas.<\/p>\n
He\u00a0 said, “I believe strongly that by Tuesday, I will visit there with
\nsecurity chiefs from Ebonyi State and look at the lack of government
\npresence and see what and what we can put in place to show government
\npresence in that area.<\/p>\n
” Let’s see what and what we can do for a\u00a0 police post to be there
\nimmediately.\u00a0 I believe strongly that \u00a0 Cross River should do the same
\nthing.”<\/p>\n
The governor commended \u00a0 Acting President\u00a0 Yemi Osinbanjo and the GOC as
\nwell as the\u00a0 security chiefs in the state for their timely intervention
\nwhich brought the situation under control.<\/p>\n
Anya’s statement also quoted Umahi as saying: ”\u00a0 I want to thank you the
\nacting President. \u00a0 I spoke with\u00a0 him about the situation and immediately
\nhe told me he was going to contact the security chiefs and they all spoke
\nwith me later. I also thank you(GOC). We are\u00a0 happy with\u00a0 the\u00a0 quick
\nresponse. I must also commend our commander here in Ebonyi State;
\nCommissioner of Police\u00a0 and heads of other security agencies in this
\nstate. They\u00a0 did a brilliant job. If not for their intervention, things
\nwould have been worse. ”<\/p>\n
The governor, who reiterated his commitment to maintain peace in the area,
\nwarned against further attacks\u00a0 by the people.<\/p>\n
He said,”I want to also assure you that we will do everything possible to
\nmaintain peace in the\u00a0 area. \u00a0 We have to do everything by way of security
\nreport from the commander there to warn the people\u00a0 because any little
\nmore push \u00a0 can escalate to war and the two states will not be good
\nexamples for Nigeria”.<\/p>\n
He also appealed to the GOC to visit Ikwo Adadama axis and Iyala Igbeagu
\nwhere such crises.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the\u00a0 GOC\u00a0 said\u00a0 he led the team to the communities and had
\nmeetings with the traditional rulers and the youth.<\/p>\n
He explained that calm had returned to the area\u00a0 and promised that\u00a0 the
\nperpetrators of the violence would be fished out and punished accordingly.<\/p>\n
