The decision of the iconic Musician Mr Innocent Tuface Idibia to call off
\nhis version of the \u00a0proposed nationwide \u00a0February 6th public protests
\nagainst bad governance due to entrenched police harassment and threats to
\nuse violent force to quell the otherwise peaceful marches shows that
\nNigeria under the current dispensation of Muhammadu Buhari \u00a0is in a police
\nstate.<\/p>\n
In a statement to the Media jointly issued by the National Coordinator
\nComrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss.
\nZAINAB Yusuf, \u00a0a civil rights group- HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF
\nNIGERIA \u00a0(HURIWA) said the Nigeria Police which has long showed itself as
\na willing tool in the hands of oppressive dictatorships has now succeeded
\nin driving dissenting voices underground which will inevitably result in
\npossible violent revolution given the excruciating economic situation
\nfaced by millions of Nigerians.<\/p>\n
“In all of these shenanigans that were played out by the different levels
\nof the Police force culminating in the issuance of a written threat from
\nthe office of the Inspector General of Police warning Tuface and other
\nNigerians not to demonstrate on February 6th or risked been killed, the
\ngreatest victim is the current government. The international standing of
\nthis government has nosedived and it is now officially a police state.
\nOne thing is sure the collective will of the greatest percentage of the
\nsuffering masses will explore other undesirable avenues to voice their
\nangst against the evil policies of this administration which have
\nimpoverished millions of Nigerians. You can’t beat up a child and stop him
\nfrom wailing”.<\/p>\n
HURIWA said it was shameful that President Muhammadu Buhari who as a
\nmember of the political opposition for over a decade benefitted from
\npublic demonstrations has now become an obstacle to the exercise
\npeacefully of the constitutionally guaranteed freedoms of speech or
\npeaceful assembly.<\/p>\n
“How can Muhammadu Buhari whose party as at 2007 (ANPP) alongside like
\nminded parties went to court of competent jurisdictions to challenge and
\nsuccessfully scored victory for Nigerians by voiding the draconian
\nmilitary\/colonial \u00a0era public order Act now turn back to employ crude
\npolice tactics to stop Nigerians from exercising their constitutional
\nrights to freedoms of speech and \u00a0peaceful assembly? This is the ninth
\nwonder of the World. Democracy is about to be slaughtered on the alter of
\nselfish POLITICAL gambit”.<\/p>\n
Expressing disappointment that the Musician Mr. Innocent Tuface Idibia
\nfor fear of arrest has had to call off his version of the planned
\npeaceful mass rallies the Rights group affirmed that the other groups who
\nmay still desire to proceed with the public rallies may do so even as the
\nRights group has called on members of the international community to
\nmonitor the activities of the Nigerian police to stop them from illegally
\ndeploying brute force against unarmed demonstrators as has been done by
\nthe police and other security forces in the recent times when they killed
\nover 200 unarmed members of the indigenous people of Biafra \u00a0(IPOB).<\/p>\n
“We want to let the Inspector General of Police to note that his
\ndictatorial and unconstitutional decision to brandish unsubstantiated
\nsecurity reports of possible breach of peace as the fake and contrived
\nweapon to harass organisers of civil protests will succeed in driving
\nvoices of opposition underground which will inevitably make them deploy
\nother revolutionary tactics which will foist a situation of anarchy and
\nchaos in the public space of Nigeria. \u00a0Those who make peaceful changes
\nimpossible are simply creating rooms for violent revolutions. The people
\nof Nigeria won’t be cowed into absolute enslavement endlessly. \u00a0Soon the
\nsuffering masses will wake up from government’s propaganda induced
\nslumber and viciously explore other undesirable but strategic \u00a0avenues to
\nvoice their angst against the evil policies of this administration which
\nhave impoverished millions of Nigerians.”<\/p>\n
Besides, HURIWA said by the action of using threats of deployment of
\npolice brutality to stop the proppsed national peaceful rallies the police
\nhas further alienated herself from the people and will never win the trust
\nand confidence of the mass of rational Nigerians who will henceforth view
\nthem as public enemies number one. The group therefore warned that social
\ncrimes and other violent attacks may increase and that people will no
\nlonger cooperate with a policing institution that is ABSOLUTELY
