The transformation of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike from ‘Political High Tension ‘ to ‘Mr Projects ‘ over the last eighteen months\u00a0is one of the most enduring \u00a0narratives of this political dispensation.<\/div>\n

From the very day Governor Wike \u00a0took over the reins of leadership \u00a0and showed the signs of performance, his detractors \u00a0have been waiting \u00a0for him to falter. They may have to wait for eternity as the make-up of Governor Wike \u00a0has no room for developmental loss of focus .<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Those who monitored his swearing-in would \u00a0remember \u00a0that his\u00a0inauguration \u00a0address had\u00a0 clear-cut steps to be taken for the revival \u00a0of Rivers State, which \u00a0was damaged \u00a0beyond measures \u00a0by the immediate past APC administration in the state. With definite pronouncements, he opened the courts closed \u00a0for \u00a0two years and also granted immediate autonomy to the Rivers State House of Assembly.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
These two profound \u00a0actions restored democracy \u00a0to the state.\u00a0Eighteen months down the line, the Rivers\u00a0State Judiciary and Legislature \u00a0are operating \u00a0independently \u00a0without interference \u00a0from the State Executive. \u00a0For Rivers people, this cannot \u00a0be \u00a0taken for granted \u00a0in view of the deliberate attacks \u00a0on institutions of Government by the immediate past APC administration.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Right on May 29, 2015, Governor Wike \u00a0took very concrete steps that \u00a0have led to his emergence as Nigeria’s Best Performing Governor. \u00a0He launched \u00a0the “Operation Zero Potholes Programme ” to address the decayed road infrastructure \u00a0across the\u00a0suburbs of Port Harcourt, Obio\/Akpor and Ikwerre Local Government Area. This project \u00a0was handled by Julius Berger and CCECC.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He went ahead to pay four months \u00a0civil servants \u00a0salary \u00a0arrears and six months pension \u00a0arrears \u00a0inherited \u00a0from the immediate past administration. \u00a0Ever since, Governor Wike has remained \u00a0one of the three governors up to date in terms of payment of salaries and pensions.<\/div>\n

Nobody \u00a0comes takes a tour of Rivers State without coming to the conclusion that Governor Wike \u00a0has \u00a0transformed the state \u00a0from\u00a0developmental backwardness \u00a0to\u00a0the fast lane of progress.<\/div>\n

Any person who visits Rivers State, promptly \u00a0drops the narrative \u00a0of insecurity and embraces the narrative \u00a0of massive development. \u00a0They even invite other governors \u00a0to \u00a0emulate Governor Wike. \u00a0This appreciation \u00a0of Governor Wike\u2019s \u00a0developmental \u00a0efforts \u00a0transcend political \u00a0lines.<\/div>\n

The Sun Governor of the Year 2016 conferred on Governor Wike \u00a0was premised on very concrete achievements that spread across different sectors of the Rivers society.<\/div>\n

At the \u00a0risk of \u00a0sounding immodest, there is\u00a0no single serving governor \u00a0that can contend with Nyesom Wike. \u00a0Though with several verifiable \u00a0reasons why he should fail, Governor Wike \u00a0chose the path of success–because \u00a0that is what he promised the good people of Rivers State.<\/div>\n

Governor Wike \u00a0was the only governor who had no\u00a0privilege of hand over notes. He had to\u00a0put his administrative skills to use to get the damaged \u00a0Rivers State Government \u00a0re-started. Indeed, his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi on May 27, 2017 predicted doom for the state when he declared that Governor Wike \u00a0would be unable \u00a0to pay salaries, let alone execute \u00a0projects.<\/div>\n

Today, Governor Wike has proved the Rivers people right. He has lived up to their expectations\u00a0through consistent initiation \u00a0and execution \u00a0of pro-people \u00a0projects and programmes. \u00a0Everywhere \u00a0you turn in Rivers State, you see projects.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The Wike administration \u00a0has ensured that governance\u00a0gets a human \u00a0face. Governance has come to \u00a0live with \u00a0the \u00a0people and the people are glad.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Most importantly, the world has noticed. In a country where governors \u00a0are certified \u00a0authors of excuses of why they are entitled \u00a0to fail, everyone \u00a0is eager to celebrate \u00a0Wike, a proven performer. Everyone is eager to cite Wike as an example, \u00a0worthy of recognition and celebration. Everyone \u00a0is asking the question; where is Wike getting the resources to perform.<\/div>\n

On Saturday 18th February, 2017, the nation stood up to celebrate Nigeria’s Best Performing Governor. \u00a0All eyes were focused \u00a0on the Eko Signature Hall where Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike \u00a0was enthroned as Sun Governor of the Year, 2016. It was an event watched live by millions of Nigerians on national television and online.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The consensus \u00a0on the night was quite \u00a0clear. Governor Wike \u00a0deserved the award. He had worked hard to merit the recognition. He has judiciously \u00a0applied the scarce \u00a0Rivers resources \u00a0to improve the living condition \u00a0of the people.<\/div>\n

Former Commonwealth Secretary General, Chief Emeka Anyaoku who presented the Sun Governor of the Year, 2016 award to Governor Wike \u00a0 declared that he \u00a0deserves \u00a0the Sun Governor of the Year 2016 award because of his outstanding performance.<\/div>\n

The international diplomat applauded Governor Wike \u00a0for placing \u00a0development projects\u00a0on the priority \u00a0list of his government.<\/div>\n

Speaking on the award to Governor Wike, Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio expressed \u00a0happiness \u00a0that Governor Wike \u00a0is getting \u00a0global \u00a0acclaim \u00a0for his outstanding delivery of projects.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He commended \u00a0the governor \u00a0for being focused in his service \u00a0to the people of Rivers State \u00a0despite the false propaganda, evil machinations and political persecution \u00a0thrown at him.<\/div>\n

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee \u00a0on Banking and Currency, Mr Jones Onyereri said that Governor Wike \u00a0has set the right example \u00a0for other governors to follow.<\/div>\n

He noted that such high level \u00a0performance \u00a0will attract \u00a0more members \u00a0to the \u00a0party.<\/div>\n

The governor said: “Without the support of the people, I wouldn’t have been governor. Based on projects, we will continue to win this award because we have increased the tempo of projects execution.<\/div>\n

“I am always thinking of projects. When I talk with my wife, I talk projects. When she cooks for me, she cooks projects. My wife has made today possible be giving me the desired peace at home, so I can concentrate\u00a0on\u00a0\u00a0building a New Rivers State.<\/div>\n

“When you have the entire political class in your state supporting you, you have no excuse than to perform. This award is a challenge to us to continue to perform.”<\/div>\n

Within the last two months,\u00a0Governor Wike’s \u00a0four awards have brought to the front burner the need for leaders to work for their people. \u00a0These awards have helped to situate the relevance \u00a0of \u00a0the right leadership \u00a0in the \u00a0revival \u00a0of Nigeria.<\/div>\n

Governor Wike \u00a0has clearly \u00a0shown the route to pragmatic \u00a0leadership and \u00a0the effective \u00a0deployment \u00a0of \u00a0scarce resources. \u00a0In celebrating Governor Wike, other governors \u00a0would be encouraged to improve \u00a0their respective \u00a0states \u00a0and plant a new narrative \u00a0on the lips of the people. \u00a0That way, the entire \u00a0nation benefits.<\/div>\n
