Sokoto government said it is partnering with investors from Turkey to<\/p>\n
revive the moribund state-owned furniture company.
\nAt its peak, Sokoto Furniture was one of the largest furniture companies in
\nthe North, employing more than 10,000 workers and serving clients from as
\nfar as neighbouring Niger Republic.
\nConducting the visiting investors round the factory, Managing Director of
\nSokoto Investment Company, Aliyu Bala Sokoto, said government is determined
\nto bring the company back to its former glory.
\n\u201cWe\u2019re talking with the Turkish investors, under the auspices of the MUSIAD
\nGroup, with a view to collaborating in various sectors. Apart from our
\nunderstanding on the furniture company, we are also working on
\nestablishment of a light tractor and agricultural implements assembly plant
\nas well technical partnership on women empowerment through skills
\ntransfer,\u201d he said.
\nTeam Leader of the MUSIAD Group, Resul Aslan, said a comprehensive report
\non the status of the company will soon be presented.<\/p>\n
He said his Group is delighted with the collaboration, and expressed
\noptimism that the factory will soon return to full production.
\nThough important to Sokoto economy in the 80s and 90s, a downturn in the
\nfortune of the Sokoto Furniture Company led to its closure and despite
\nprovision of loan by the Asset Management Company of Nigeria (AMCON) in
\nefforts to revive it, not much was achieved.
\nGovernor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal Tambuwal in 2015 cleared the N1.5 billion
\nAMCON debt and took back possession of the company, with a promise to
